Student Gouncil Holds First Meeting; Standing Committee Selections Made
The -main business of the i
first meeting of the Univer
sity's 'Student Council was the
appointment of standing com
mittees for the coming year
by Council president Steve
Gage.
Chairman of the four key
areas are: Jim Samples, Stu
dent interest, Al Plummer,
academic and faculty; John
Abrahamson, public relations
and John Nolen, public issues.
The newly organized Pub
lic Issues Area will be of spe
cial Interest to the Council,
students and faculty this year.
Initiated by Gage last
spring, the Public Issue area
members will "investigate
their duties" previous to un
dertaking studies and initiat
ing discussions in student, fa
culty, state and national areas
which relate to the student.
"We may possibly move in
to areas where private organ
izations are now acting," said
Gage, "but we will endeavor
only to create new ideas which
can be adapted by the exist
ing group, not to take over."
Emphasizing that the Coun
cil would concentrate on go
ing into areas now deficient,
Gage mentioned as an ex
ample, the possibility of re
ceiving the now. defunct Ne
braska University Council on
World Affairs."
