V jit (Main' Walh Purcell and Pat Clare, senior lettermen, will lead the Hus kers this year. Rain Slows Drills Although slowed by rain this week the Husker fall drills have progressed satis. factorily with few serious in juries. Currently the Huskers are engaged in a battle of posi tions as several starting spots are still undecided. The Husker line, with letter men two deep except at right guard, appears solid enough to stop any enemy thrusts and supply adequate passing sup port as the aerial game is considered to be the new weapon on the Husker offense this fall. Besides the returning line men, sophomores making bids for the top two teams include Bob Brown, 251-pound right tackle from Cleveland, Ohio; left end Dick Callahan of Sioux Falls, S.D., Monte Klf fin, 220-pound Lexington left tackle; David City's John Kir by at left guard and Ed Mitch ell, 258-pound right guard from Galveston, Tex, At left end Nebraska has lettermen Purcell and Jim Huge. Purcell, rated one of the toughest defensive ends in the Big Eight, led the Hus kers in playing minutes last fall with 447. Huge, junior let terman from Holdrege, and Callahan, who has also been used at fullback and right half, give the Huskers plenty of left end depth. Bob Jones and Gary Too good head the left tackle corps. Both are 200-pound plus juniors wfth game experience. Kiffln, bothered by a back Injury previously, looked good in spring drills. Dwain Carlson of Fullerton, Larry Donovan of Scottsbluff and Dallas Dyer of Lexington will be the Scarlet and Cream left guards this fall. All three are lettermen and Donovan is a converted end while Dyer is the team's utility man, now stationed at the left guard slot. Two Returning Centers At center the Huskers have two lettermen and an up-and-coming sophomore, Ron Mich ka. Senior tri-captaln Tingel hoff and senior George Haney both saw action last year, Haney as a left tackle, t he Mphraska center depth was reduced when Lyle Sittler, soph from Crete, was lost for the season because of a knee operation. Plavinir richt tuard for the Husker will he letterman Ty rone Robertson from Toledo and Mitchell, huge sopho more guard. At right tackle NU has big Bob Brown, Al Fischer and Archie Cobb. Fischer And Cobb are both lettermen and Cobb is t,he NU punting spe cialist. At the present time his draft status with the re serves is unknown, however. Lettermen Mike Eger, Dick McDaniel and Pat Salerno head the Husker right end corps. Salerno injured his knee this summer but has been working out regularly running up and down the sta dium steps in sweat clothes. Nebraska should be able to boast of added backfield strength this vear with an Im proved passing attack plus the threat of Thunder Thorn ton, the Toledo, Ohio flash. Thornton, who was switched to left, half In spring drills, was the Huskers leading ball carrier last year at fullback and could, be among the na tion's top halfbacks before the I1 grid season concludes. Letterman Warren Powers from Kansas City will share the left half duties with Thornton. 3 Deep at Right Half At right half, the Huskers are three deep in lettermen and soph Willie Ross Is push ing for a starting position. Clare, senior tri-captain, Ber nie Clay and defensive spe cialist Dennis Steuwe are the returning lettermen at the right halfback spot. The fullback ipot appeared to be Coach Jennings' num ber one problem last spring when he switched Thornton to left half. The failure of Noel Martin, senior lettermen from Clay Center, Kans., to recov er from two knee operations Attention N Men All N Club men Interested in selling football programs this fall should attend a con cessions meeting today, ac cording to L. At quarterback, the NU coach could start any one of three signal-callers, John Fai mon, Dennis Claridge or Ron Meade. Claridge, a sopho more, seems to have the In side track for the job on the basis of his running ability at well as his aerial arm. Faimon is a junior letter man from Omaha and Meade, who suffered a knee strain this week in practice and probably won't scrimmage to day, is the Huskers' place kicking specialist from Cam by, Minn. Others on the injured list include Stuewe, who has tha flu and a strained ankle, Lar ry Kramer (leg), Ron Gil breath (shoulder), Bob Brown (pulled groin muscle) and Thornton with a pulled muscle.
