Near-Lincoln Area Offers Recreation, History

panded a bit to include the
areas around the city which
can be reached in a three to
four now drive.

Lincolnites need not travel
far from the city to reach a
number of recreation and va
cation spots which are relax
ing, beautiful, historical and
for the most part inexpen
sive. The State Game Commission
has worked out a map, titled
NEBRASKAland, with Lincoln
as the center, which shows at
tractions to visit within a 200
mile radius.
A short fifty miles to the
southeast is Nebraska City
where Arbor Lodge State Park
Is a big attraction. The 52
room colonial mansion of J.
Sterling Morton, founder of
Arbor Day, is open to the pub
lic. The arboretum comprising
more than 156 varieties of
trees and a rose parden de
serves a wandering walk
through it.
Steinhart Park just west of
Nebraska City is one of Ne
braska's most popular recrea
tional facilities with its golf
course, swimming pool, tennis
courts, baseball diamond and
fishing lagoons.
Inside the cfty ftself is the
Block House Square, a replica
of the original Fort Kearny;
and John Brown's cave, a hid
ing place for escaped slaves.
The bridge across the Mis
souri River, the river dock
and the barges on the river
are of great interest to pho
tographers. Brownille
Farther down the river is
Brownville where the life and
times since 1850 have been re
stored. In the far southeastern
corner are the recreational
areas of Verdon Lake and Bur
chard Lake.

the most popular fishing spots
in the state. Closer by are the
Alexandria Lakes near Fair
bury and the Crystal Lake rec
reation grounds at Ayr.
The Pioneer Village at Min
den 150 miles west of Lincoln
has been called one of the top
United States' attractions.
Here in the museum yesterday
is preserved for tomorrow and
prairie life is recreated in a
reconstructed village with
houses, stores, a country
church and a little red school
house. More than 97,000 visitors an
nually visit the House of Yes
terday at Hastings to study
pioneer history and natural
history in this fine museum
and planetarium.
Gavins Point
A longer trip within the 200
mile radius is to Gavins Point
Reservoir, sometimes called
Lewis and Clark Lake. This
trip is scenic and Gavins Point
is an excellent fishing area.
Near here are two beautiful
parks with camping and recre
ational facilities, Niobrara
State Park and Ponca State
Park.
The weekend traveler can
also visit such historical spots
as the Homestead National
Monument near Beatrice com
memorating the first home
stead granted under the
Homestead Act of 1862. Fort
Kearney State Park, 10 miles
west of Kearney, was a fort
ress in the 1840's. Stolley Park
southwest of Grand Island, is
the site of Old Fort Independ
ence. Victoria Springs State
Park, near Anselmo has sev
eral mineral springs and two
old-time cabins.
Visitors are welcome at the
Omaha Indian reservation at
Macy. On Sunday afternoons
there is an "open tepee," and
Indian tribal dances are performed.
North and northwest of Lin
coln, at the Fremont and Dead
Timber Recreation Grounds
water sports can be enjoyed.
At nearby Two Rivers there is
lput and take" trout fishing.
For a fee of $1.50 five trout
can be taken.
Fish Hatchery
At the state -owned fish
hatchery at Gretna, the meth
ods of hatching the spawn, the
stocking of the waters of the
