IFC Defeats Proposal to Eliminate
Own Slate for Council Representation
By Dave Wohlfarth
A plan which would elimi
nate the Interfraternity Coun
cil (IFC) -slate for the Student
Council was defeated by a
17-5 vote Wednesday night.
The plan, introduced by po-
litical chairman Chip Kuklin,
proposed that the IFC revise
its present Student Council

tomorrow
slating in the following four
ways:
That the interview com
mlttee be an "unbiased pan
el."
Any student be permitted
to be interviewed.
Two persons be slated for
each position.
That the slate be en
dorsed by IFC, Panhellenic,
Residence Association for
Men (RAM) and Independent
Women's Association (IWA).
Kuklin suggested that the
"unbiased panel" be com
posed of either one represent
ative from each of the four
organizations or an off-cam'
pus group.

The plan brought immedi
ate opposition from If t rep
resentatives Dwight Meier
henry, Jerry Gale, George
Krause and Dick Stuckey.
Gale pointed out that the
plan was unaesiraDie, in nis
opinion, because it destroyed
"the purpose of the IFC to
see that tne interest oj iraier
nities is furthered."
Krause questioned the pos
sibility of having an unbiased
panel and Meierhcnry said the
"independents don't vote us
out because they aren't organ
ized."
"We are trying to stimulate
men with fraternities to be
come leaders. If we aren't
trying to do that, then why
have an IFC and fraternities;
anybody can live together,"
Meierhenry continued.
Inadequacy
Kuklin answered that he
thought in the past, inade
quate Greek Representation
on the Student Council was
because the IFC "is forcing
Greek men into positions of
prestige."

tion was pointed to by Steve

"This (Student Council plan)
will destroy Greek dominance
on Council and would elimi
nate good Greek leaders."
Kuklin also countered, "If
an inept person is elected to
the student Council the IFC
gets blamed. This plan would
get the blame off the IFC. If
we have the best leaders why
are we afraid to compete on
equal basis."
Mierhenery replied, "If the
independents are unsatisfied,
why don't they vote the
Greeks out. Our duty in IFC
is to promote the Greeks."
Defeated
After the lengthy discus
sion, the question was called
and the proposal was defeat
ed. The five houses that vot
ed in favor of the motion
were Farm House, Phi Gam
ma Delta, Sigma Alpha Eps'i
lon, Sigma Alpha Mu and
Sigma Nu.
In other business the IFC
unanimously voted to support
Sigma Phi Epsilon's "request
to reorganize."
The motion allowed the Ex
ecutive council to recommend
that the Sis Eds (1) be al
lowed to reorganize, (2) Initi
ate men, (3) regain rushing
and pledging privileges and
(4) assume the responsibili
ties of a member of the IFC.
These recommendations are
subject to the approval of the
proper Administration author
ities. Another passed resolution
concerned the IFC's rededica-
tion of Greek Week, April 16-22.
The purpose of the resolu
tion, according to Roger My
ers, head of the affairs com
mittee, is to rededicate some
of the purposes the IFC is try
ing to fulfill in Greek Week
and make the members stop
and think about Greek Week."

should be well attended.
