Nebraska's swimmers will
take a record into the Big
Eight championships at Nor
man, Okla., Thursday through
Saturday.
The Huskers downed Pitts
burg (Kans.) State, 57-34, Fri
day night and won a triangu
lar from Grinnell and Kansas
State Saturday at the Coli
seum Pool. Nebraska scored
76 points to 54 for Grin
nell and 19 for Kansas State
in the three-way meet.
In deal scoring Nebraska
dropped Grinnell, K-M,
and Kansas State, 73-16. Grin
nell thumped Kansas State,
61-23.
Two Nebraska records fell
in Friday's dual and five
marks were lowered Saturday
as the Huskers had little trou
ble in winning either meet
Coach Dick Klaas's swim
mers won 10 of 11 events in
Friday night's rout of Pitts
burg State. Doug Scherer sti
fled a Husker sweep when he
won the 200-yard individual
medley for the visitors.
Groth Sets Marks
Husker sophomore Jay
Groth set records in winning
both the 220 and 440-yard
freestyle events. He lowered
his own 220 mark one-tenth
of a second with a 2:18.0
clocking and bettered his 440
record by 7.5 seconds with a
winning time of 4:53.9.
Joe 'Stocker was only one
tenth of a second off the var
sity record in winning the
50 and 100-yard freestyle race
for the Huskers.
Groth bettered both bis
marks again Saturday with a
2:164 clocking in the 220 and
4:53.6 time in the 440.
La Vera Bauers, Husker
sophomore from York, shat
tered a 14-year-old record in
the 100-yd. freestyle with a
:53.0 clocking. The old mark
was set by Marvin Grimm in
1947.
Stacker took J& seconds off
the 200-yard individual med
ley record with a winning
time of J2;2p.8. The Nebraska;
400-yard medley relay team
of Larry FerreH, Stocker,
Larry McClean- and Phil
Swaim set a mark in that
race at 4:06.0. The old mark
of 4:09.9 was set in 1959 by
FerrelL McClean, Stocker and
Joe Gacusana.
Bauers Doubles
Bauers doubled in winning
the 50 -yard freestyle and
Stocker was a double winner
with a victory in the 200-yard
breaststroke.
The Huskers won all but
two events with Grinnell win
ning the 200-yard backstroke
and the 400-yard freestyle re
lay. Pete Snyder was the win
ner in the backstroke for
Grinnell.

Nebraska's track team fell at the hands of Oklahoma, Big
Eight indoor champs, Saturday, 75-47, in the last meet of the
indoor season.
A stadium record and three meef records were toppled
by the Sooners as they scored firsts in all but three events.

Lai Wins Ping Pong Title
Sigma Chi won the 1961
all University table tennis
championship.
Dick Newman, winner of
the third flight, was the only
flight champion for Sigma
Chi.
Edward Lai of the YMCA
is individual champion.
Lai, a graduate student
from vHong Kong, won the
first-flight competition.
Winners of the other flights

Baseball Meeting
A meeting for all fresh
men interested in partici
pating in baseball will be
held at 7 p.m. Thursday in
the Nebraska Fieldhonse,
according to baseball coach
Tony Sharpe.
Sharpe urges all base
ball prospects to attend this
meeting.

Nissen Honored

Mike Nissen, undefeated in
11 matches for Coach Mickey
Sparano's Husker grapplers,
has been awarded an honor
able mention berth on the ail
American mat team.
The team is chosen by 12
experts, mostly coaches, from
all sections of the country.
Nissen was named in the
115-pound division where be
will compete in the Big Eight
tourney March 3-4. He has
been wrestling at 123 pounds
with one match at 130 pounds.
Martin regained the stadium
pole vault record and broke
the meet record of 15- as
he vaulted 15-1. After be set
the record with relatively lit
tle difficulty Martin said,
"That's the main reason I
came np here."
Husker Jim Kraft finished
second in this event with a
14-0 vault.
Martin pulled a double
win by skimming the high
hurdles in :07.6 with Husker
Bill Fasano finishing close be
hind him.
Stevens Doubles
The Husker camp was not
completely black as s o p h o
more ace Ray Stevens pulled
a double win in the mile and
two-mile events. Stevens
coasted to a mile victory over
Lee Smith of Oklahoma in
4:20.8, his best mile mark.
Stevens also cut two-tenths
of a second off his two-mile
mark as he again outlasted
Smith to post a 9:46.4.
The other Husker first came
in the 60-yard low hurdles as
Fred Wilke led a one-tw fin
ish with Fasano coming in
second. WilVe's winning
time was :07.l.
Steve Swafford of Oklahoma
won the broad jump with
24-2 and set a new meet rec
ord by one inch. Teammate
Don Warrick landed second
place for the Sooners with a
23-6 leap. Bob Knaub of Ne
braska finished third with a
23-5 leap. ,
The other meet record came
in the 600-yard run as Bob
Wilcox of Oklahoma finished
in 1:12.7 to shatter the 1:13.1
set by Joe Mullins of Nebras
ka. Husker soph Bill Kenny lost
to Buddy Stewart in the 1000
but ran his fastest time, fin
ishing two-tenths of a second
behind Stewart's 2:16.6.
I Lindsay Wins Easily
Mike Lindsay, Big Eight In
door champ in the shot put,
easily won this event with a
toss of 57-6. Al Wellman of,
Nebraska placed second with
a 52-5V? and Larry Reiners,
third with a 51-8 effort.
Mark Sullivan nipped Steve
Pfister in the 60-yard dash
with a .-06.3.
In a special 60-lows frosh
Bob Hohn won with a :06.9
and Ray Knaub finished sec
end in :07J).
