Ne braska took Emporia State of Kansas Friday night, 64-40, but fell to mighty Oklahoma, 70-35, Saturday afternoon. Nebraska set two varsity records in beating Emporia State. Sophomore freestyler Jay Groth knocked 11.5 sec onds off the 440 record with a 5:02.4. In the 400-yard freestyle re lay the Hniketi swam a 3:37.6 which Is 7.4 seconds better than the old mark. Members of the team are Larry McCIean, LaVern Bau ers, Joe Gacusana, and Phil Swaim. Oklahoma, using its depth to full advantage, pulled away from Nebraska and posted a 70-35 win. Oklahoma won eight of eleven events and set three pool records. Ron Hosner 1 o w e r e d the record in the 200-yard indi vidual medley to 2:20.3. John ny . Day swam the 200-yard backstroke in 2:08.6, and Gor don Collet, the NCAA breast stroke champion, won the 200 yard breaststrdke in 2:36.6. Bright Spot The bright spot for Nebras ka was sophomore Jay Groth who set two varsity records. Groth took a full second off the 440-yard freestyle record that he set Friday against Emporia State. His time was 5:01.4. In the 220-yard free style he lowered the mark to 2:18.1 for his second record. LaVerne Bauers picked up the only other first by win ning the 50-yard freestyle in :24.0. Hays, Kans. The Huskers have yet to lose this season. Nebraska scored 81 points compared to Colorado State's 54, and Fort Hays' 18. Coach Jake Geier's gym nasts copped first places in six of the seven events. Den- Mullins Cops 600 Crown At Boston Former NU Star Wins By One Yard By Janet Sack Joe Mullins dethroned Jim Stack of Yale when he won the 600-yard run in 1:12.0 in the Boston Knights of Colum bus Track Meet. - Mullins, a senior at Nebras ka, won by a yard over the second place man, Jim Weder- burn of NYU. His greatest mo ment of anxiety occurred when Stack fought for the lead in the last lap. Mullins pro duced that famous kick of his and broke the tape first, with Stack placing third. In 600-yard run competition Mullins has only lost one race in three years of college com petition. Mullins said that going into the meet Stack was the fav orite in the 600 event. "I had to win this one to get other invitations- It sure feels good to beat the favorite," he said. On Saturday Mullins will compete in the Los Angeles Invitational meet. A week later, Jan. 28, he will com pete in Winnipeg, Canada. He has also accepted the invita tion to run hi the , Milrose Games in New York City on Feb. 4. Split GROTH STARTS RECORD-SETTING Fort Hays Edge Nebraska, 15-13 By Cloyd Clark Fort Hays wrestlers squeaked by Nebraska, 15-13, in a meet highlighted by two Nebraska pins Saturday night. Huskers Jim Raschke and Dick Van Eickle both scored pins in their matches, but the Fort Hays Tigers were able to win five of the remaining six matches and the team vic tory. Husker heavyweight J i m Raschke, turned in the out standing performance of the evening when he pinned Terry Pfannensteil in 58 seconds. Raschke's pin was the finale of the meet. The other Husker pin was scored in 6:02 of the nis Anstine led the Husker win with two first place finishes and a tie for first for 20 points. Charles Wlliams won two events for 14 points. Doug Moore, Nebraska captain, also scored 14 points. Dick McCov added 13, Louis Bur- kel 12, Herb Hanich 5, and Bill Brass 3 points. Anstine was first on the sidehorse, horizontal bar, and tied for first on the parallel bars with Bruce Bowler of Colorado State. Williams Wins Two Williams picked up his two titles in the free exercise and tumbling. Moore captured the other Husker crown with a first place in rebound tum bling. The Husker captain was third on the horizontal bar, and fourth on the flying rings. The lone event that Ne braska failed to win was the flying rings where Hopper of Colorado State edged Nebras ka's Herb Hanich for first place. The Huskers swept the first three places in tumbling with Williams, McCoy, and Burkel finishing 1-2-3 respectively. Burkel placed in four events for Geier's gymnasts. He was fourth in free exercise, third on the parallel bars, sixth on the flying rings, and third in tumbling. The Huskers next meet Is Saturday when they travel to Lawrence, Kans., for a re match with the Jayhawks. Ne braska defeated Kansas ear lier this year. The summaries: Free Exercise: 1. McDole Inks Pact With Pro Cardinals Nebraska tackle Roland McDole has signed a profes sional football contract with the St. Louis Cardinals of the National Football League. The 6-3, 250-pound Husker was the Cardinals fourth draft choice. He also had been drafted by Denver of the American Football League. The victory was over Adams State and the other loss to Kansas State. Even though the Nebraskans were defeated, they bettered the 26-8 loss they suffered at the hands of the Ft. Hays Ti gers last year. The next outing, for Coach Mickey Sparano's grapplers will be Feb. 3, when the Husk ers will meet South Dakota State on the Coliseum mats. C Buffs Snap NU Win String at 4 Nebraska's four-game winning string came to an end Sat urday night as Colorado avenged an earlier loss at the hands of the Huskers with a 66-51 win at Boulder. The Buffs dropped a 65-61 decision to Nebraska last Mon day night in an overtime battle. The loss leaves Jerrv Bush's Huskers with a 2-1 mark in season. Colorado has a 2-1 confer ence record and a 10-4 mark for a season record- The Buffs started strong, hitting 58 per cent from the field to build a 41-27 halftime margin and the Huskers never caught them. Ken Charlton, who finished with 20 points, and Wilky Gil- more led the early surge for !ox Walseth s cagers. Nebras ka closed the gap to 10 points and 50-40 early in the second half, but couldn't overcome the early lead enjoyed by Colorado. Rex Swett, who didn't ar rive until lust before game time, led the Husker scoring with 15 points. The Husker sparkplug had to remain in Lincoln for an exam Saturday morning before flying to Boul der. ' Bill Bowers added 12 for Ne braska as the Huskers were playing their third straight Frosh Thinclads Rank Near Top Nebraska's freshmen two- mile relay team ranks third in the nation among collegians with a mark of 49:00:0. In the first annual Track & Field News college freshmen two-mile team race, the Huskers were represented by John Portee, 9:33.0; Andy Steele, 9:49.1; Stuart Tucker, 9:50.9; Tony Cruz, 9:51.0; and Jim Lewis, 9:56.0. With his 9:33.0, Portee also earned individual honors by placing fifth among college freshmen. Track & Field honor awards will be given to the top teams and individuals.
