NU Matmen Triumph
Over Adams State

Nebraska's grapplers scored their first win since Febr.
12, 1959, when they defeated Adams State College, 18-6,
Wednesday night at the Coliseum..
Coach Mickey Sparano's matmen had little trouble with
Adams State as the victory ended a 16-meet losing streak.

Mike Nissea won his third
match of the season in the
123-pound opener with a 4-0
decision over Adams State's
Gail Frank. Nissen scored
his four .points on a takedown
with eight minutes left in the
nine-minute match, and a re
versal with 2:40 remaining.
Husker Dick Van Sickle
needed riding time to take
a 3-2 verdict over Jim Wil-
harm of Adams State in the
130-pound division. Van Sick
le took a 2-0 lead on a re
versal in the second period.
but Wilharm tied the match
at two-all with his second
escape of the match with
only 19 seconds remaining.
Faiman Wins
Jim. Faiman gave Spar
ano's wrestlers a 9-0 lead
with a 2-1 decision over
Larry Moore at 137 pounds.
Faiman's reversal with 2:19
left gave him the two points
and the victory.
Bert Peterson decisioned
Gene Moses of Adams State,
13-8, in a wild and wooly
match. The 147-p o u n d e r s
thrilled the small crowd with
repeated offensive maneu
vers. - Peterson scored six take
downs and allowed his foe
to escape the same number

final three-minute period.
Raschke completed a suc
cessful evening for the Ne
braska wrestlers with a 9-5
decision over Merlin Miller.
1-1 Record
The win leaves Nebraska
with a 1-1 mark for the sea
son after a loss to K a n s a s
State last Saturday. Wednes
day night's win broke a 16-
meet loss string that started
at the end of the 1959 season
with two losses, was extend
ed by 13 last season and
reached 16 straight against
Kansas State this season.
The next meet for the
Huskers is Jan. 14 when they
entertain Fort Hays State
College of Fort Hays, Kans.
Several Husker grapplers
will be competing unattached
in the AAU College Invita
tional Regional Wrestling
lournament at the Omaha
Civic Auditorium Arena Dec.
20-21.

Lifting Title

Burnett edged Sigma Alpha
Mu,' 20-17, for the all-University
weight lifting title.
Burnett was led by Pablo
Kirven who set a record in
squat lift by lifting 400
pounds and total amount lift
ed with 1,115 pounds.
Kirven was named the out
standing individual lifter.
Runner-up to Kirven was
Dennis Barton who lifted a
total of 995 pounds in the
165-pound class.
Other records were set by
M. J. Alemzadeh who Med
250 pounds in the bench press,
Pat Fitzgerald, who lifted
290 pounds in the bench
press and 500 pounds in the
dead lift, and Dean Sich,
198-pound class, 320 pounds
in the squat.
Heavyweight Steve Marx
set a record in the dead lift
with 450 pounds.

Huskers Seek 4th
Straight Cage Win
Nebraska, after completing a successful four-game home
stand, now must face two of the top teams in the country be
ginning with Detroit Saturday night and meeting Cincinnati
Monday night.
The Huskers will return Wednesday for an encounter
with Arizona in the final contest prior to the Big Eight pre
season tourney at Kansas City, Mo., Dec. 26-29.
Detroit was ranked number
three in the nation prior to
its first loss of the' season
Monday against Purdue. The
Titans are led by one of the
nation's best in Dave De
Busschere, who averaged 25.6
points and corralled 19.8 per
cent of his team's rebounds
last season.
He, was the only player in
major college statistics to
rank in the top ten in both
categories. Teaming with
DeBusschere for a potent one
two scoring and rebounding
punch is Charlie North. Norrh
averaged 19.8 points per con
test last season.
Both North and DeBuss
chere are juniors. John Mor
gan, a 6-6 transfer from Coal
ing, a Junior College in Cali
fornia, will join DeBusschere
(6-5) and North (6-5) to
give the Titans a tough front
line. Morgan averaged 25
points per game at the junior
college last season.
Detroit will probably have
6-3 Larry Hughes and
6-1 Frank Chickowski in the
backcourt. Hughes averaged
11.7 points per game last year
while Chickowski averaged
4.3

Both Nebraska and De
troit have 3-1 recorrds. De
troit won its first three
games at home against South
Dakota State, Utah State, and
Indiana before dropping a de
cision on the road to Purdue
Monday.
Nebraska's lone loss was
i suffered at the hands of
Wichita and the Huskers
have wins over Iowa State
Teachers, Utah State, -and
Denyer.
Each team's win over Utah
State came in the final sec
onds. Nebraska scored five
points in the last 16 seconds
for a 65-60 victory. Detroit
scored a field goal with six
seconds remaining for a 62
60 triumph over the Aggies.
Coach Jerry Bush will start
the same lineup that opened
against Denver Tuesday
night. This will find Jan Wall
(6-6) and Tom Russell (6-7)
at forwards, Bill Bowers (6
5) at center, with Jim K
walke (6-3) and Al Roots
(6-2) at the guard posts.
Kowalke is pacing the Ne
braska scoring with a 16.9 av
erage. WaU is second in the
scoring figures with a 12.9 av
erage and Russell has an 11.9
mark.

Varsity Mermen
Compete Tonight
Nebraskans will get their first chance to see the Husker
swimmers in action this season when the varsity takes on the
freshmen tonight at 7:30 in the Coliseum Pool. No admission
will be charged.
The varsity expects to be stronger this year in the relay
events and stronger depth-wise in the individual events with
thd exception of the individual medley and the backstroke.
"We should set varsity rec
ords in the medley relay and
free style relay," Coach Dick
Klaas said.
The Husker varsity has the
top three scorers returning
from a year ago in Larry
McClean, Joe Stocker, and
Kuni Mihara.

100-yd. breast stroke and
fourth in the 200-yard breast-

the Cornhusker gymnasts at
2 p.m. Saturday in a dual
meet at the Physical Educa
tion Building.
Kansas has had a gym
nastic team for only two
years arid the appearance at
Nebraska will be the first for
them on Husker courts.
Nebraska traveled to Law
rence, Kans., last year for
the first meeting between the
two clubs.

outlook is very good, accord
ing to Ron Bucklin, freshman
mentor. "The yearlings could
crack six of the existing
freshman records with ease,"
Bucklin says.
Jeff Amsler in the back
stroke and individual medley,
Bill Fowles in the butterfly,
and Bill Henry in the back
stroke are past state cham
pions. Fowles did his high school
swimming for Lincoln High
and Henry was a member of
the Omaha Benson squad.
Amsler was a standout at
Sioux City, la., Central High
School.
Other top freshman swim
mers who will be performing
against the varsity tonight are
Dave Roberts in the free
style; Chuck Levy, diving;
Don Copas, breaststroke; Jim
Fosnot, breaststroke; and Jim
Dermyer, free style.
Bucklin says his squad will
be strongest in the backstroke,
butterfly, individual medley
and medley relay events.
