than a track man, turned in
a :49.2 for the 440 as a high
school junior.
He is running the quarter
primarily because his fresh
man coach told him to be
cause of his long stride.
Saunders was clocked in
:53.6 in his first meet as a
freshman.
In the Big 10 Meet, a meet
between 10 Nebraska high
schools from as far east as
Fremont and as far west as
Scottsbluff, Saunders turned
in a :51.9 as a freshman.
With this :51.9 he brok?
the old Columbus high school
record of :52.2. Saunders
qualified for the state meet,
but was disqualified in com
petition because he was less
than two strides ahead of an
other man before he switched
lanes.
As a sophomore Saunders
ran a :49.4 in the state meet
placing second. With this
time he became the fourth
fastest sophomore in the
United States for that year.
Between his sophomore and
junior years Saunders had an
operation on his right knee
for a split cartilage, which he
got from broad jumping.
The knee healed well, but
it has its drawbacks. Saun
ders said, "The constant rac
ing on a track stiffens my
knee. The longer I ru& the
slower I get." . : v;
Gold Medal..
Saunders best year was as
a junior. He ran the 440 in
the State Meet in :49.2, the
best in his career; This
earned Saunders 'his first
gold medal.
Fifteen minutes after run
ning his best quarter, Saun
ders ran the 220 in 22.6 plac
ing third.
In postal competition with
all ' the states touching Ne
braska, Saunders was the
only first place for the state.
He won the 440 with a :49.2.
In his last year of high
school competition Saunders
copped the 440 in the state
meet with a :4&3, winning
his second gold medal in
this event. He also ran the
220 in :22.6 to place second.
In this meet he anchored
the Columbus 880-relay team
to victory in 1:30.6, break
ing the 25-year old state rec
ord of 1:31.1.
During the Big 10 meet
Saunders ran the 220 in :22.0.

Grid Rushing Averages
Pat Clare, left halfback from Sioux City, Iowa, led the
Huskers in rushing average during the 1960 football season
with an average of 4.6 "yards per carry.
Clare carried the ball oh 37 plays for 169 yards. The
junior halfback lost only one yard in the 37 carries.

Wins Game

A twisting last second lay
up by John Nared gave the
freshman White team a thrill
ing 65-63 victory over their
intrasquad Red rivals last
night in the Nebraska-Iowa
State Teachers college pre
liminary game.
The 6-3 Omaha Central
grad led his short, but hard
fighting White team with 19
points and a majority of the
team rebounds.
The outstanding individual
effort of the evening, how
ever, must go to the Red's
6-8 Bil Vincent who almost
single-handedly pulled the
game out of the fire with his
clutch shooting. The former
Omaha South star ana high
school all-American took scor
ing honors of the game with
28 BPints, most of which came
on his patented sweeping
hook shot from the corner
and middle.
Linn Littlefield of Pryor,
Oklahoma and Charlie
Jones of Washington D.C.
aided the White team with
16 and 15 counters respec
tively; Darly Petsch, 6-5 cen
ter from Marysville, Kans.,
helped the Reds with 17.

Sparano Names 21 Grapplers
For Invitational Tournament
Nebraska's wrestlers will
get their first taste of inter
collegiate competition this
season when they take part
in the Iowa State Teachers
College Invitational S a t u r
day. Coach Mickey Sparano
named a 21-man , squad to
compete in the meet at
Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Husk
ers will be competing against
wrestlers from such power
laden teams as Iowa State,
Handball
Club Formed
'An attempt to organize a
handball club at Nebraska is
underway with four Husker
students trying to get the
ball rolling.
The club has been sanc
tioned by the Student Coun
cil and faculty sponsors have
been selected, according to
Myron Papadakis, one of the
four organizers. The other
three students working on
the project are Al Cummins,
Dick Chamberlain, and Paul
Cotsimes.
"The object of the club
will be to teach the sport to
beginners, promote handball
tournaments, and to field an
organized team in the Na
tional Handball t o u r n e y,"
Papadakis said.
The club also plans to en
ter tournaments at Omaha,
Sioux City, Iowa, and Den
ver, Colo., according to Pa
padakis." The four members
responsible for the organiza
tion of the club all partici
pated in the National Hand
ball tourney a year ago.
Persons interested in join
ing the handball club should
contact Myron Papadakis at
the Delta Upsilon house.
