Sharpe has indicated a starting lineup of Neil Nan nen (6-4) and Chuck Slad ovnik (6-4) at forwards, Bill Vincent (6-8) at center, Charles Jones (6-3) and Daryl Petsch (6-5) at guards. Four members of the fresh man starting cast were all state performers a year ago and the fifth player was named to the all-city team in Chicago, 111. Nebraskans Nannen, Sladovnik, and Vin cent were all-state performers in Nebraska and Petsch was an all-stater at Marysville, Kans., High School. Nannen led his Syracuse team to state championships in 1959 and 1960, and Vincent was a main cog in the Omaha South team that captured the Ne braska class A championship in 1960. Sladovnik was named to the Catholic all-America team as a member of the- Omaha Holy Name team that was runnerup to Syracuse in Class B in 1960. Jones was an all-city per former In Chicago. Backing up the freshman starting unit will be such high school standouts as John Nared of Omaha Central, Dennie Puelz and Keith Sieck of Lincoln Southeast, and Roger Denesia of Wayne. Nebraska's varsity is with out its two leading scorers of a year ago in Herschell Turn er and Al Maxey. Turner, now playing professional ball with Baltimore, led the Husker scorers with 362 points in 24 games for a 15.9 average per game. Maxey, who is scholastical ly ineligible, was the number two scorer with a 12.2 per game average on 293 points in 24 games. Kowalke Third Kowalke, one of only three seniors on this year's squad, was third in scoring a year ago with a 10.5 average. The Sioux City, Iowa, senior scored 252 points and was also third in rebounding with 144. Bush says Nebraska's suc cess depends on "how well our bi? men perform" and one of those big men is Russell, a 6-7 transfer from Indepen dence Junior College in In dependence, Kans. Russell was a member of the Junior college all-Amerl-can team last year and led all scorers In the Junior col lie championship tourney at Hntchinson, Kans. Wall, one of the starting forwards, was fifth in team scoring during the 1959-60 sea son with a 5.3 average. Wall was top free throw shooter on the team, percentage-wise, hit ting 31 of 39 attempts for a .795 percentage. Roots and Swett give the Huskers a good ball-handling combination in the backcourt. The speedy pair will be lead ing Nebraska's fast-breaking offense. NU Matmen Make First Appearance ByCloyd Clark Husker wrestling fans will see Mickey Sparano's squad in action for the first time this season in the freshman varsity meet Nov. 28. Fans will get a chance to see the Husker's depth and a Husker wrestling team which could surprise the Big Eight, If not this year, next year. The freshman squad is stacked with four state cham pion wrestlers and three others who Trere runner-up. Because of the equalness of the two squads. Coach Soar- no said, "I hate to make any predictions, of the winner it will be a good match and it should be very Interesting to those watching. The depth which Sparano has boasted of becomes evident by looking at the lineups of the varsity and the freshmen. At the 115, 123, 157, and the heavyweight classes the wrestler hasn't been decided for sure. Some of the freshmen grap plers who should be watched are Nebraska champions Jim Fuxa, Bud Ottmann, Bob Van Outcry, and Jim Lytic, Metropolitan wrestling cham pion in Maryland. Jim Raschke, Jim Faiman, Dan Hoevet, and Bruce O'Cal laghan are returning mem bers of last year's wrestling team and represent the ex perience of the varsity. Purcell said, 'We were a little awed in the first hall by the noise and everything, but Coach Jennings told us at the half we could do it. "He told us," 'You show no fear. Go out and suck 'em up. You can hit harder than this ball club.' "I'll tell you this. He's the best coach in the nation. He changed our offense and de fense a little at halftime and that did it. He's just the best." Thunder Thornton had spe cial praise for Pat Fischer. "When we were down 14-0 we all felt pretty low," the full back said. "But Fischer gave us pep and desire again. He gave us that extra spark we needed."
