The Nebraska wresUers 0-13 record of last season will be In the balance as they meet the Wildcats, iourth strongest team in the Big Eight last year. ounn place doesn t give much credit to the Wildcats, but they were beaten by three of the top five teams in the NCAA tournament. Kansas State has a squad f 30 varsity grapplers in cluding eight lettermen and last year's 115-pound Big Eight champion, John Doo ley. Dee Goodland, K-State's outstanding wrestler last sea son, and Larry Word, high point Wildcat wrestler of 1959 60 will also bolster the Kan sas State team. Omaha heavyweight and tri-captain Jim Raschke will lead the Husker grapplers in to the coming season. Rasch ke, runnerup in the Big 8 tournament last spring was last season's only consistent winner. Harold Thompson, Jim Fai mon, and Garry Harley are the other returning Husker lettermen. Coach Mickey Sparano is optimistic about the coming season, saying, "I'm sure that Nebraska's record of not winning a meet last year will be topped this year." Coach Sparano has been en couraged by the amount of interest with which the wrest ling program has been greeted this year. Last year Coach Bill Smith was unable to field a com plete team in many of the meets, but this year Sparano boasts not only a complete team but has substitutes at every position on his 44-man squad. The Husker matmen will have two warmup meets be fore the season's opener witn Kansas State, the Varsity Frosh match Nov. 28, and the AAU individual wrestler tournament at Iowa State Dec. 3. ComtUatreH floor Klaas Has 10 Lettermen Swimmers Prep aring For Ovener i By Roy Katskee Nebraska's swimmers, led by co-captains Joe Stocker and Larry McClean, are pointing toward an 'improve ment over their 6-7 record of a year ago. The. swimmers open the season Jan. 7 against Min nesota. In Dick Klaas's second year as varsity coach he bat ten returning, lettermen and four promising sophomores. Two seniors and one Junior scored fof Nebraska last year in the Big Eight cnference meet They are: Joe Stocker, third in the 100-yd. breast stroke and fourth in the 200 yd. breast stroke; Larry Mc Clean, fifth m the 100 yd. butterfly; and Jim Frank fourth in diving. Stocker and McClean are seniors while Frank is a junior. In coach Klaas's estima tion the team has good spirit and a good chance to im prove on last year's fifth rat ing In the conference. The team is currently working in the pool to begin preparation for Minnesota. The freshman roster in cludes 4 All-Staters, three from Nebraska and one from Iowa. It promises to be one of the best frosh teams in years. Outstanding members of the team are: Jeff Amsler, Sioux City, Iowa; individual medley and backstroke. The 15 lessons wQl be con ducted by the Nebraska State Game Commission and will be offered free of charge. Les sons will include instruction in boat handling, water ski ing, canoeing, and sailing. The class will meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 4 p.m. and those completing the course will receive a certifi cate in small craft handling from the American Red Cross and the game commission.
