Coach Frank Sevigne is tak ing six runners: Ray Stevens. Bill Kenny, Rich Kie'r, Clar ence and Joe Scott, and Paul Nielsen. "Sophomores Stevens and Kenny are running real well, but the rest of the members are not working up to expec tations," Sevigne said. "This whole meet will de pend upon the performance of the other four men. We're not getting the balance and per formance that is needed to win," Sevigne said. Stevens has the best time of any of the Huskers with a 15:39 which earned him sec ond place in the Kansas State Nebraska dual meet. In the Iowa State time trials l.tst weekend Karl Brown led the qualifiers over the three mile course in 16:00. Iowa State's other harriers are Dan Muyskens, Bill Lynn, John Highbarger, Jan Peter sons, Charles Darby, and 7arl Holtz. Cyclone captain Harlan Mil liken did not compete in the time trials because of a sirle injury. He will see no action in the meet today. This is the opening meet for Drake and Iowa State. The contest will be the first comer ence clash for the Sooners who have lost two of three intersectional battles. The perennial Big Eight titleholders were thumped b Northwester and Texas and won a narrow 15-14 decision over Pitts burgh., v , . Bud Wilkinson's boys are likely to find the going in the Big Eight just as tough as the non-conference games. Kansas and Missouri have both given indications that they are in line for the conference crown this vpr Thp Tiuers arri" undefeated in four games and have a 1-0 conference mark while Kansas is 2-0 in the league chase with their only defeat coming at the hands of a strong Syracuse team. Oklahoma has been sole champion since the Big Six became the Big Seven in 1948. The Sooners shared the title with Kansas 'in 1946 and 1947 as members of the Big Six conference. Nebraska signaled the start of the Sooner downfall a year ago when the Huskers handed Oklahoma their first conference defeat since 1946, but Bud Wilkinson's squad still won the league crown with a 5-1 mark. Kansas was picked by many before the start of the season as the team to knock Oklahoma off the Big Eight throne and Saturday's game between the two teams will clear upt the Big Eight picture as far as Oklahoma is concerned. However, if Kansas does drop the Sooners, as they are favored to do, the Jayhawks still do not have clear sailing to the title. Missouri is beginning to loom larger and larger each week as a definite contender. The Tigers unbeaten record includes a 21-8 win over Penn State and a 34-8 vic- tnrv ftior tho Air Pnrpp 'AraHpmv. Penn State's only loss came at the hands of Missouri as the Nittany Lions have a. 20-0 win over Boston University and a 27-16 triumph over Army. The Air Force Academy sailed to a 32-8 win over Colorado State University and a 32-9 victory over Stanford on the passing of quarterback Richie Mayo before losing to Missouri last week. Kansas needs the win over Oklahoma because a loss would drop them out of first place in the conference stand ings since Missouri should have little trouble with Kansas State. Colorado is also unbeaten in the conference and a win by either Colorado or Missouri coupled with a loss by Kan sas would drop the Jayhawks out of first place. This corner would like to make one prediction right now and that is: 'No team in the conference will go through the conference schedule without a defeat. Last week this corner dipped below the .700 percentage level for the first time with 20 right, 9 wrong and one tie for a .683 mark. That leaves the season record at 86 right, 29 wrong with five ties for a .738 record. Now for a look at this week's schedule. Big Eight ARMY 21, Nebraska 13 Army's Tom Blanda will put Nebraska's pass defense to its first test of the season and the Cadets will win this one. KANSAS 21, Oklahoma 14 The Sooners step into Big Eight competition for the first time this season and will find things have changed. IOWA STATE 27, Colorado 7-olorado' dilemma is the opposite of Nebraska. The Buffs have a strong passer in Weidner, but a limited rushing offense. .'. MISSOURI 39, Kansas State 7 The Tigers should have little trouble extending their unbeaten string to five.
