Thornton Sets Pace
For Nebraska Rushers
Thunder Thornton continues
to lead the Huskers in rush
ing after three games with
157 yards on 32 carries for
a 4.9 average.
Pat Clare moved into sec
ond place in the average
yardage figures ahead of
Clay White. Clare has car
ried the ball nine times for
34 yards or an average of 3.8
yards per carry. White has
carried the same number of
times but has gained one less
yard for a 3.7 average.
In total yards rushing Pat
Fischer is second with 122
yards on 34 carries for a 3.6
average. Fischer leads the
team in number of .carries.
Nebraska leads its oppo
nents in rushing average with
3.5 yards to 3.4 yards for the
three opponents. But the Hus
kers have had 52 fewer rush-

Nineteen intramural foot
ball teams are undefeated
after Friday games.
Leading League 1 are the
Sigma Chi and Kappa Sigma
A squads with 2-0 records.
Phi Delta Theta and Phi
Gamma Delta are undefeated
in League 2, and Cornhusker,
Beta Sigma Psi, and Sigma
Alpha Mu lead League 3.
Other undefeated teams are
Pioneer Co-op and Theta Chi
in League 4, Benton and Mac
Lean in League 5, Boucher
and Canfield in league 6,
Kiesselbach in League 7, Del
ta Tau Delta, Theta Xi, Alpha

Nebraska's Archie Cobb
ranks third among Big Eight
punters with a 40.7 yard av
erage. Cobb has punted 18
times for a total of 734 yards
Only Oklahoma S t a t e's
Dave Hannah and Kansas
quarterback John Hadl are
ahead of the Husker booter.
Hannah is the leader with a
47.0 average and Hadl is sec
ond with 43.2.
Pat Fischer, Nebraska
quarterback, leads the con
ference punt returners with a
?3.2 yard average on five re
turns. Fischer is tied for third
in the scoring race with Tom
Watkins of Iowa State. Both
have scored 18 points. Dave
Hoppmann of Iowa State and
Bert Coan of Kansas are the
leaders with 24 points each.
The Huskers have three
ball carriers in the top 15
with Thunder Thornton in the
number six spot, Fischer is
llth, and Bernie Clay is 15th.
Dave Hoppmann is the leader
with an average of 6.7 yards
per carry.
Ron Meade and Fischer
rank 11 and 12 respectively
in1 passing yardage with
Meade completing four of
seven passes for a total of
32 yards and Fischer hitting
on two of 10 for 28 yards.
Hoppmann also leads this de
partment with eight comple
tions on 17 attempts for 120
yards.

Sixty wrestlers began work
outs Monday afternoon under
the watchful eye of Mickey
Sparano, n ew Husker grap
ling coach.
The sixty wrestlers report
ing Monday is a distinct
change from past seasons
when Nebraska was forced to
forfeit as many as three
matches during a meet be
cause of a lack of wrestlers.
The squad is about evenly
divided betwee, varsity and
freshman candidates.
"I had heard about Bill
Smith saying that there
wasn't any interest in wres
tling on this campus but I
didn't believe that," says
Sparano. Smith is former
wrestling coach at Nebraska.

class and also won several
AAU titles.

wrestling. The wrestling
grant-in-aids will be awarded
on a performance scale and
any wrestler can get a schol
arship by winning matches,
according to Sparano.
Omaha South's wrestling
team was in about the same
condition that Nebraska's has
been in the past few years
when Sparano went to South
and built it into a high school
wrestling power.
"About the only difference
between high school and col
lege, says Sparano, is that in
high school you have to coach
what material you have, but
in college you have to be a
lecruiter in addition to coach
ing." Tech Graduate
Sparano graduated from
Omaha Tech High School and
joined the United States
Navy when the Second World
War broke out. He entered
Nebraska in 1946, graduating
in 1949.
The former South High
coach served in the Air Force
until 1953 when he accepted
the position as wrestling
coach at South High School
where he remained until com
ing to Nebraska this year.

plers Dec. 10 when they meet
Kansas State at the Coliseum.
