A group which is very In terested in the weather con ditions consists of the spring sports coaches at the Univer sity. Each of them is hoping that the ground will become dry enough so that their res pecthe teams will be able to practice outside. Of the spring sports, the tennis team, coached by Ed Higginbotham, is brobably in 5 ft V " -"2N 4m. Herschell Turner H.T. Busy This Week Herschell Turner, Nebras ka's All Big Eight basketball player, will be headquarter ing in Kansas City and Den ver starting Friday. First, he goes to Kansas City for the Shrine East West All Star game, then to Denver to play with the Stars of Storz in the AAU tourna ment. Then he starts work ing out with Evansville, Ind., College, winner of the NAIA tournament. Evansville is en tered in the Olympic elimina tion tournament, also to be held in Denver. The winner of this tourna ment will make up part of the Olympic squad which will play in Rome next summer. Higgenbotham who has set up headquarters in the Coliseum, had divided his practice sessions between in- fundamental training. Two Courts Although the two courts set in the Coliseum are crowded, there is enough room for adequate practice. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday the team plays matches for "ladder" posi tions. During the remainder of the week, specific tech niques are studied and prec ticed. Coach Higglnbotham's team boasts only two returning let termen from last . year's squad. Al Arrigunaga and Bill Kendall last year's mona gram winners, are currently holding down number one and two positions, respectively. Three returning squad mem bers, Dick Newman, Jack Craft and Dave Calhoun, two sophomores, John Nasi and Tom Johnson and transfer student Stan Kruschwitz are all battling for the remaining positions on the 5 member traveling squad. positions on the 5 member The netters will swing into action during the weekend of April 1 and 2. The Huskers will host Wichita University on Friday and win play Creighton University on Sat urday. Both matches will be played here. A match April 8 with Creighton will be the dress rehearsal for the team's southern trip. The trip, taken during Spring Vacation will be to Kansas and Oklahoma. Entries are due today in 102 PE Building, not later than 5 p.m. The diamond men will play six inning games and compe tition will be held in three tourneys, Interfraternity, Inde pendent and Resident Halls (Burr and Selleck). Last year Manatt copped the Selleck title and went on to sweep the All-University Tourney. Dental College won the In dependents crown, Theta XI was the Fraternity top-spotters and the Burr Champ was Vfh Es. Each team must furnish an umpire and regular softbail rules will apply. Six players must be ready for play and spiked shoes are banned. There will be an important Softball Manager's meeting Mar. 31, at 5:00 p.m. in 114 PE Building. The 1960 Horse Shoe Tourney will be single elimination with competition in doubles only. Each organization may en ter six doubles teams. With action beginning April 4, deadline for entering is to day in 102 PE Building. Intramural netters start play in early April in the 1960 Spring Tennis Doubles Tourney. Each organization may be represented by six teams. There will be separate flights and Independent entries, with All-University Championship. Beta Theta Pi won last year's Fraternity division, Gus I ruled in Selleck and the Chemists copped the Independent title.' Individual doubles champs were Galen Saltsman and Stan Kruschwitz. Deadline for entering is April S. April 23 will be the date and Pioneers Golf Course the place for the Intramural Spring Golf Tourney, team and in dividual championships. Fraternity, Resident Halls and Independents' competition is slated and back to defend their titles will be Phi Kappa Psi (Fraterntiy) and Dental College (Independents). Gene John son of Delta Tau Delta was last year's individual champ. All players must report between 7 and 8:30 a.m. for 18 holes of medal play. The low six scores of each team will de termine its final position. Weight lifting starts April 25 and will be held in the Coli seum Weight Room. Deadline is April 22 for entering tourney, whigh will fea ture six different lifts and competition in seven divisions. En tries should be turned in to Jim Maul, 108 PE Building. Currently underway are two tourneys, volleyball and pad dle ball. Thirty teams are left in the double-elimination vol leyball tourney. The tourney consists of two Fraternity divi sions, two Bull-Selleck divisions and one Independent division. Undefeated teams include Sigma Phi Epsilon and Theta Xi in Division I, Beta Sigma Psi and Pioneer in Division II, Selleck and Boucher in Division III, Farifield and Canfield (who played last night) in Division IV and the Iranians, who have already won the Division V Independent Crown. How'i this for a high-scoring Intramural basketball play a ft A Terry Hagstrom scored 146 points in an intramural bas ketball game at UCLA as his Phi Delta Theta fraternity knocked off Alpha Sigma Phi, 172-12. Six-foot Hagstrom, who made 116 of his points in the sec and half, isn't out for varsity at UCLA. Too busy with his en gineering studies, he 'explains. He hit on 72 field goals and two free throws. Haven't received any derogatory comments on All-Star players or final rankings for the Intramural Basketball Tourney, so we'll assume everyone is happy. WHBRB7WHHM? Golfers Will Open April 9 The Husker Golf team will open the 1959-60 season in a dual meet with Oklahoma State at Stillwater on April 9. Returning lettermen are Larry, Romjue, Tom Fulker soh, and Dennis Mullins. Al so returning will be Dave McConahay who did not let ter. Romjue, finishing 15th in the Big Eight meet last year will be the number one man on the team, with Fulkerson and Mullins in second and third respectively. Top sophomore prospects for Coach Bill Smiths squad are Sam Sloan, Eugene Johnson and Garth Moore. Last year the Huskers won seven while dropping four in dual meet competition, with three losses coming at the first of the season on the southern trip. They finished sixth in the Big Eight con ference. Volleyball Finals Set For Tonight The coed volleyball tourna ment climaxes tonight with final play slated at 7:30 p.m. The competition, which started Dec. 8, with 13 teams entered has narrowed down to tonight's match between Alpha Omicron Pi-Delta Up silon No. 1 and Gamma Phi Beta-Sigma Phi Epsilon No. 2. In last week's semifinal ac tion, the AOPi-DU team de feated the Gamma Phi Beta Sigma Phi Epsilon No. 2 squad, 15-1 and 14-7 Earlier in the evening the Gamma Phi's Sig Ep team dropped the Alpha Chi Omega Beth Theta Pi group, 14-4, 5-12 and 9-7. In other semifinal action the Gamma Phi-Sig Ep No. 2 team beat Kappa Kappa Gamma-Sigma Alpha Mu 11 7, 6-10 and 11-6. The Kappas entered the semis via the forfeit route. They won a quarterfinal match against the Kappa Al pha Theta-Phi Delta Theta team beause of default.
