Ernest Gunter Picks Up
Four More First Places
By Cloyd Clark
The freshmen track squad
squeezed past Kansas 63-58,
to bring its postal track rec
ord to three wins and no de
feats. Nebraska's depth unseated
the young Jayhawkers, who
won eight out of fourteen
events. Although the fresh
men only won six events,
Ernest Gunter
they placed in every event
and swept the 60-yard high
hurdles, 60-yard low hurdles,
and the 440-yard run.
Ernest Gunter, the flying
Philadelphian, repeated his
previous feat of winning four
events and helped the mile
relay cut 2 seconds 'off their
postal time to win against
Kansas. Gunter equaled his
times in the 60-yard dash, the
60-yard highs and low, and
the 440-yard run.
Distance man Ray Stephens
bettered his time in the mile
and two-mile, and John Sil
veira cut his time in the 600
yard run. Both Stephens and
Silveira failed to win their
events.
Ron Moore finished second
behind Gunter in the lows,
but he tied Gunter in the
highs. Moore and Gunter both
ran :07.4 tieing Gunter's pre
vious meet marks.

The opponents lead hearts,

How do you avoid the loss of
two diamond tricks? '
You might lead out five
rounds of trumps in the hope
that the opponents will fool
ishly discard diamonds. Not
a good chance unless you can
hypnotize your opponents.
A different plan is to lead
out the ace and a low dia
mond in the hope that the
opponents will not be in posi
tion to cash a second diamond
trick at once. This might
work as the cards lie.
West wins the second dia
mond with the king and re
turns a trump. You play the
seven of spades from dummy
and East plays the five. If

a high spade you can stay
in dummy with the seven of
spades and can return to
dummy later with the nine of
spades.
Does this give you any
ideas?
Do It Yourself
The right idea is to do it
yourself rather than rely on
a friendly opponent and a
lucky break in diamonds.
Trump the third round of
hearts with the ten of spades
and lead the deuce of spades
to finesse dummy's seven!
This weird trump finesse
does not give you an addi
tional trump trick. It merely
gives you an additional entry
to the dummy. You arrive in
dummy with the seven of
spades and you can get back
later with the nine.
You use the first entry to
lead the king cf clubs from
dummy. East covers with the
ace (if he didn't you would
discard a diamond), and you
ruff with the jack of spades.
Now you get back to dum
my with the nine of spades
to cash the queen and jack
of clubs. This enables you to
get rid of two low diamonds,
and the contract is assured.

Star Of The Week
Big 8 Diving Title
Eyed by Frank
By Norm Beatty
Consistency might be a
good by-word for this week's
Star of the Week, He is diver
Jim Frank.
Frank, who excels in diving
and swims when he is need
ed, has been honored on the
basis of his constant contri
bution throughout the season
to the N.U. swimming team.
The second sophomore
swimmer to receive the Star
of the Week award this year
has scored over 50 points in
15 dual and one invitational
meet during the past season
in his special one and three
meter diving events.
Preps For Big Meet
Frank will accompany his
teammates to Boulder, Colo,
this weekend where they will
complete their 1959-1960 sea
son in the Big Eight confer
ence meet.
"Nebraska should take
third or fourth, Oklahoma,
without a doubt, will win the
meet and I imagine K. U.
will be second. Iowa State
should be close to the top
too," Frank predicted.
As a pre-dent student
Frank said the Nebraska
swimming team should be at
its best in two years for as
many reasons.
"First, the high school
swimming programs are in
creasing each year. Three

years ago there were seven
high schools with swimming
sports. Now there are 12. Al
so, kids now have a chance to
swim competitively during
the summers.
Great Recruiter
"The other reason is that
Has is a great recruiter. He
has built the Nebraska team
quite a bit and he will con
tinue to do so in the future,"
Frank pointed out.
Frank did his high school
swimming at Lincoln South
east High school where he
won the State diving cham
pionship for two years, the
City diving championship for
three years and the Mid
East Conference diving
championship for three years.
Placing second in the one
and three meter diving events
at the regional AAU meet
last summer at Topeka,
Kans., and being named high
school all-American for two
consecutive years were
Frank's greatest thrills.
Had Many Offers
The six foot, 150 pound Star
picked N. U. after he had
turned down offers from
Ohio, Michigan, Anapolis,
Oklahoma, Yale and others.
"I felt going to Nebraska
would be more convenient as
I could live at home," Frank
said.
Frank concluded that he
has no ambitions what so ev
er to continue his diving aft
er college.
