Daily
Nebraskan
Sports
Sports Letterip
la a recent "Daily Nebraskan," you covered the football
season of this year quite well. You also, in a rather quiet
manner, blasted Bill Jennings and it was very unfair. As I
reaa your column 1 thought, "Shades of the Bill Glassford
affair!"
It is always the coach who gets the blame for a losing
season. Injuries to key players and its effect on the other
players; availability of scholarships in a school where money
is an ever constant problem; difficulties of getting players
from high schools to sign such scholarships at Nebraska be
caue of their knowledge of its past football mifortunes these,
and other factors, seem not to enter into your thinking pic
ture at all.
You blasted Jennings; I presume you can take it because
I have a poem especially written for you.
TO BROWN
Blessings on Thee, little Brown,
Barefoot boy with pointed crown;
Thy pen is sharp,
Thy pen is free.
Thy words are sick and so are Thee.
"We lost, we lost!", Thy cry of woe!
Guys like Thou have made it so!
How lorg the age since last we had
A football team that's aught but bad?
I watched- Sam Francis, Vike, and "Blue,"
And Bernie, Lloyd, and Sauer, too.
The noble past
Will be recast
Give Jennings time, it's not done fast!
Three years the man has been in town,
(Thy words reflect thy youth, 0 Brown)
Recruit he must.
Recruit he is,
For sure, this man knows recruitment biz.
Thou spoke of 'leadership," young one,
Assume some then! Don't try to run
Affairs concerning Jennings.
He'll do the job,
Thou don't play hob
By fouling the work that's begun.
I like to win far more than Thee.
That's why I say, "Look up, and s?e!
Give him time, give him help,
Leave they knife unhoned,
Get off his back, and leave him alone!"
I do not doubt your sincerity in the kast; I am sure
you must believe what you write. Jennings has done a really
tremendous job of iecruiting, but he still does not have the
kind of scholarship funds which will get a Billy Cannon, an
Olen Treadway, or a Bobby Boyd. Such funds will come
slowly, so here the problem of rebuilding into a football
power will be delayed about twice as long as it would else
where. . You who are sportswriters crucified Bill Glassford for
a situation he could not help but attempted to alleviate. For
the love of Heaven, don't do it to Jennings! He's a big-time
coach, able to do everything we want to have done to make
us a football power again; but you guys who get into a big
sweat to get it done right now are going to have to cool off.
If Jennings would happen to go now, the whole stinking mess
has to start from the bottom all over again. This we can
not afford.
You and the other sportswriters in the state can control
the football thinking of Nebraskans. If you can just remember
that it is going to take us so much longer to grow than in
other schools, you can help the other Nebraskans to see it too.
This is important. This is fair. This is as it should be.
Sincerely,
Marvin C. Genuchi

By Hal Brown
Head basketball coach Jer

The Huskers starting line
up will be the same as last

Turner and Maxey were
one-two in scoring for the

there are indications of a
better balanced scoring attack.
In a scrimmage a couple of
weeks ago, seven players
scored in double figures in an
impressive display before an
estimated crowd of 600.
Turnp- led last year's squad

Maxey was close behind with
a 15.3 average and 384 points.

in the Big Seven pre-season
tournament when he scored
28 points against Michigan
