Orange Bowl Hopes at Stake
As Huskers Meet Iowa State
Nebraska will be trying to
keep their Big Eight Orange
Bowl hopes aliye when they
travel to Ames for an impor
tant test with Iowa State,
The Huskers and Cyclones
are both in the running for
the. bowl berth but the loser
will be eliminated. Nebraska,
has a 1-2 conference record
and Iowa State owns a 2-2
mark. i
The Huskers have losses to
Kansas and Missouri and an
upset win over Oklahoma
while the Cyclones have
dropped games to Missouri
and Kansas with wins over
Colorado and Kansas State.
Nebraska's defenses must
stop the Iowa State single
wing which includes hard
running backs Dwight Nich
ols, Mike Fitzgerald and Tom
Watkins. The Huskers have
split in games against single
wing teams this year.

Huskers winning 7-6 over Ore
gon State but losing 23-7 to
Indiana. . i
Nebraska was forced inside
for the first time this season
by Thursday's snow. Head
coach Bill, Jennings called
for a brief workout in the
fieldhouse.
Word that the Ames grid
iron likely will be soggy
from rain and snow did not
disturb Jennings.
"We. have played on only
two . dry fields this fall,
against Indiana and Mis
souri," Jennings pointed out.
Nebraska lost both those
games.
The Nebraska coach de
clared, "Iowa State is as
good as any team in the Big
Eight. We'll have to play as
well as we have all year to
stay with them.V'
Good news from the Husker
camp is that Pat Clare, soph
omore halfback, was , given
the go-ahead sign in practice
this week and came through
without injury. Clare has
been sidelined with a foot
injury but is expected to see
duty against the Cyclones.
The Huskers have used 34
players in 'their first seven
games with 32 of those being
available for the Cyclone en
counter. Quarterback . Tom
Kramer, and end Pat Salerno
are the only players "who
have seen action but will not
play against Iowa "State.
A 36-player traveling squad
will leave Lincoln at 12:30
p.m. today and stay overnight
in Des Moines before contin
uing to Ames. The Huskers
may work out on the Drake
University field Friday after
noon depending on the weath

Thanks to an error by the printers last week, my predic
tion for the Oklahoma-Nebraska game didn't get in the pa
per. I will admit, however, that I picked Oklahoma so I will
count it as a wrong prediction. . -
This corner picked four of six games right last weekend
for a .667 percentage. In addition to the Oklahoma-Nebraska
game, I missed the Missouri-Colorado prediction.
My record for the season is 34 right and 10 wrong for a
.773 mark. -
The Colorado-Kansas and Nebraska-Iowa State-games
are the big. games on the conference schedule for Saturday
as all four teams have a mathematical chance of repre
senting the Big Eight in the Orange Bowl,
This week's games should shape up as follows:
NEBRASKA 8, IOWA STATE 7 Nebraska's heralded
defense will get a thorough test in this one from Dwight
Nichols, Tom Watkins and Mike Fitzgerald but the momen
tum from last week should bring the Buskers through.
KANSAS 13, COLORADO 7 The Buffs shocked. Missouri
last week but the Jayhawk's halfback combination of John
Hadl and Curtis McClinton will make the difference.
OKLAHOMA 43, KANSAS STATE 0-The Wildcats took a
53-0 lacing at the hands of thel Iowa Hawkeyes last week
and this week it's the Sooners turn to romp.
AIR FORCE 21, MISSOURI 6 The Falcons all-junior
backfield of Richie Mayo, Mile Quinlan, Monte Moorberg
and Phil Lane will' be too much for the Tigers in this re
gionally televised and nationally broadcast game.
OKLAHOMA STATE 27, DENVER 12 The Cowboys are on
the rampage with five victories in a row and should extend
it to six before finishing the season against Kansas and
Oklahoma.
NORTHWESTERN 14, WISCONSIN 7-This is a battle for
the Big Ten phampionship with Ron Burton supplying the
punch for Northwestern as they move towards an undefeated
season.
Undefeated Huskers
Nearly lost in the excitement of last weekend's upset
win over Oklahoma was the fact that two Nebraska athletic
squads completed undefeated seasons.
The Husker freshman football team finished their sea
son with a 19-0 win over Kansas State to complete their sec
ond consecutive undefeated season under frosh coach War
ren Schmakel.
Coach Frank Sevigne's cross country team was snowed
out of their meet with Colorado last weekend leaving them
with an undefeated dual and triangular season as they enter
the Big Eight championships at Lawrence, Kansas, Satur
day. ,

Nebraska will be taking
an undefeated record into the
Big Eight cross country
championships at Lawrence,
Kansas, this weekend as the
host Jayhawks go after their
13th consecutive title.
Gail Hodgson of Oklahoma
broke the Kansas string of
individual champions at 11
last year with a time of
14:00.4 over the three-mile
course. !
The Jayhawks had won
first place every year since
1947 until Hodgson snapped
the string. Bobby Ginn was
the last Nebraskan to win as
he took first place honors in
1940, '41 and '46. ,
Rating favorites roles are
Miles Eisenman of Oklahoma
State, Tom Skutka of Kansas
and Hodgson. Eisenman set
conference indoor and out
door two-mile records last
spring in his first year at
Oklahoma State.
