Game History Often Lost in Confusion iasi m ine displays, pa rades, queens and alumni gatherings on Homecoming weeKena is the game itself Nebraska has won nine of its last 22 Homecoming con tests, while pne tie has been recorded and 12 games have been lost, in the period from 1937 to 1958. First Is Win The first Homecoming game on record was a 1919 win over Kansas. Nebraska's coach was Henry Schulte; who piloted his team to the Mis souri Valley Championship. The game was played at the State Fair Grounds. In the 1924 game, the Husk erg were given even odds against the Jayhawks from Kansas. It was the first Home coming game to be played lit the newly constructed Memor ial Stadium. Nebraska scored twice in the final quarter to win 13-6. The University went on to win the Big Six Championship and produce its sixth All Ameri canEd Weir. Long Streak The longest Homecoming winning streak was from 1929 to 1937 with wins over Kan sas (four times) and Kansas State (four times). . Dana Bible coached the suc cessful Cornhuskerg for sev en of the eight years. Nebras ka won the Big Six four of these years, and finished sec ond the other three seasons. The biggest Home coming margin was recorded in 1941 when the Huskers beat Missouri 38-0. Nebraska won the Big Six again that year and made its first and only appearance in the Rose Bowl. Although the 1944 season saw the Huskers win only two of nine games, one of the vic tories was the 24-20 win over Homecoming opponent Mis souri. Top Scoring Nebraska scored its great est number of points in the 1950 Homecoming tilt via a 40 34 decision over Oregon State. AU-American Bobby Reynolds scored 23 of the total Husk er points. The 1954 Orange Bowl team handed Oregon State a 27-7 loss on Homecoming Day. Four-Year Drouth Nebraska's longest losing Homecoming streak was a 4 year drouth from 1945 to 1949. Nebraska teams of '57 and '53 both lost Homecoming games by decisive scores. Kansas has been the most frequent Homecoming oppon ent in the last 22 years. The Jayhawkg have tangled with the Huskers 9 times, winning 4 and tying one. In diana and U.C.L.A. have de feated the Big Red each time they have coming. : The Hoosiers participated in the festivities on successive years, 1941 and 1942. Colorado split in and Nebraska have two encounters. Twelve of the 22 contests have had point margins of seven points or less. Parade Plans Floats, Bands, Queen The 1959 Homecoming Queen, Skip Harris, will reign over the annual parade to be held Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. ' The new queen and the 1958 queen, Helen Hockabout, will ride on the Tassel float. Her attendants also will par ticipate in the parade but each will ride in a separate car. A total of 20 floats will ap pear in the parade. They include the Tassels' publicity car; "N" Club'g float, "Devotion to Democ racy;" Varsity' Dairy Club, "It's In the Bag;" Red Cross, "You beat 'um. We'll fix 'um;" Block and Bridle Club, "Hit Em Hard In the End Zone;" Builders, "He's Sooner Born; He's Sooner Bred, and now that- Sooner's really Dead!;" Rodeo Club, "Wreck the Sooners." Student Union, "De-Feet the Sooners;" Nebraska Soc cer Club Float; Young Re publicans, "Knock 'Em Dead;" Fedde Hall, "Fedde Hall's Recipe for Okie Stew;" Terrace Hall, "Make Those Sooners Crawl;" Towne Club, "Topping the Sooners;" Delta Sigma Pi, "Cap the Sooners;" Seaton I, "Happy Hunting Grounds." Benton House, 'What Is a Sooner?;" Alpha Gamma Sig ma, "Oklahoma Falls;" Farm House, "Put the Soon ers into Orbit;" Burr Hall, "D-Schooner the Sooner;" and the Tassels Float". Two bands will appear In the parade this year, the Uni versity marching band and the University High School band. In addition an ROTC color guard and the ROTC drill units will participate in the parade. Also appearing will be the cheerleaders and the Corn Cob man. - Plaques will be presented to the winners in each divi sion which includes men's, women's and organization en tries. A traveling award will be given for the honorable mention winner. Also to be KUON-TV Plans Special Recital KUON-TV will present a special recital Nov. 20. The University Faculty Ensemble will present a one hour television program. The group includes Jack Crossan, piano; Arnold Schatz, violin; Priscilla Parson, cello; and Wesley Rei.t, clarinet. They will feature selections from Hindemith and Loeillet and a Sonata by Brahms. Each organized house am activity group on the campus is allowed to spend up to $150 on its displays. Houses that spend over this amount are disqualified from winning the trophies. All expenses must be in cluded in the itemized list which each Homecoming chairman turns in to the Inno cents. Used materials are included at the price they would be sold for were they not used. The final estimate of the cost of the displays must include money spent for all materials, including crepe paper, wire, chicken wire, napkins, paint and lumber. AWS Extends Closing Hours Closing hours for Univer sity women have been ex tended to 2 a.m. for Home coming Saturday. ' Girls may not take over nights on this date, according to AWS. J ack-0 -Lanterns Bidding For Homecoming Attention A double holiday will be celebrated on campus j5at urday. Besides Homecoming, the a p p e a r a nee of spooks, ( witches, black cats and jack-o-lanterns marks the arrival of Halloween. In part, the holiday is a survival of the ancient Brit ons' autumn festival in hon or of the Sun God. The Druids (a religious order of priests) lit bonfires to this god, as their way of ex pressing gratitude for the harvest. They believe on this oc casion that Sambairi, the lord of death, assembled the souls of those who had died within the year, and who had, for their sins, been confined in the bodies of the lower animals.
