Grad's Late Piano Study
Broke Musician Tradition
Korean .Kyung Ae Ko, a
graduate piano, major, breaks
the tradition that musicians
must begin their study at the
age of five.
Ko, who is from Seoul, Kor
ea, had intended to become a
doctor ' until her sophomore
year in high school.
However, her mother ob
jected, saying that there were
already 18 doctors in the fam
ilytaking into consideration
her mother's side of the fam
ily as well as her father's
And Ko's father was a doc
tor too!
But Mrs. Ko, who had brok-
en the tradition of marrying
a man of her parent's choice, j
evidently decided that her
daughter could also break
with the tradition of being a
doctor. Mrs. Ko had been a
member of the royal family
of Choo.
With a little inducement
and force, Mrs. Ko was sure
that she could interest her
daughter in piano rather than
medicine. The inducement
took the form of a new grand
piano and the force was lock
ing Ko in the private practice
room.
But Ko wasn't impressed
until she won first place in a
two and a half years after
this, she practiced six hours
a day.
During four years of train
ing at Shenandoah Conserva
tory in Dayton, Va., she prac
ticed from four to six hours
a day. She practices at least
three hours a day at the Uni
versity. And now she is considering
being a concert pianist.
