Huskers Will Host Oklahoma
Turner Close to Season Record
Tankmen Host Okla. Today;
Big 8 Meet Starts Thursday
By Tom Dawes
The Nebraska tankmen,
fresh from a victory over
Grinnell last Saturday, will
host the Big Eight leaders
Oklahoma tonight in the Coli
seum pool at 7:30. The Soon
ers have posted a 6-1 record
thus far this season and are
undefeated in conference
competition.
Since Coach Matt Mann
joined the Sooner coaching
staff in 1954, his teams have
not lost a Big Eight dual meet
nor failed to win the league
title. Last year Oklahoma
piled up 179 points against
88V2 for their nearest compet
itor, Iowa State. Nebraska
finished sixth.
Point-Producers
Heading the list of Sooner
point getters are: Larry Ler
mo, who set Big Eight rec
ords in both the 400-yard free
style and the 1,500-metcr free
style events; Chuck Lechner
double wnner in the 100 and
200-yard backstroke; Carlyn
Cruzan who established new
conference records in both
the 100 and 200-yard breast-
stroke; and John Janovy who
posted a new Big Eight mark
in the 160-y a r d individual
medley. In addition, the Soon
ers have Gorden Collet, a record-breaking
sophomore
breatstroker; and Lome Hale,
a promising sophomore div
er. Husker coach Hol'le Leplcy
said, Oklahoma is iwo deep
In every event but we will
fight them all the way."
The Wednesday meet will
be a warm-up for both teams
as the Big Eight meet begins
Thursday night with the 1,500
meter freestyle at 7:30.
Last Year's Results
Five of the first six places
winners of last year are re
turning. Larry Lermo of Okla
homa copped first; Bob Con
ner of Oklahoma took second;
Bill North of Nebraska swam
third; Jim Sheff of Colorado
placed fourth; and George
Foster of Colorado took sixth.
Tom Coblentz of Kansas State
and Mike Cassidy of Kansas
have been improving steadily
throughout the season and
could be right in there
The times of Conner and
Lermo are far below the
rest of the field and they
should repeat their 58 per
formances. Husker point leader Dale
Voss and Co-Captain Bill
North have been posting top
times in the 200 and 440-yard
freestyle events this season
and both are capable of scor
ing points in the 1,500.

"Most outstanding team ef
forts I have ever seen and we
could never have gotten third
place without it," were the
opening comments given by
gymnastics coach "Jake" Ge
ier in reference to the All
College Invitational at Boul
der, Colorado last week-end.
The Air Force Academy cap
tured the team title after ac
cumulating five firsts and tie
ing for another for a tdtal of
183 points and Colorado State
College ranked second with 109
points which barely preceded
Nebraska's total of 103
points for the third slot.
Lacked Depth
Nebraska was faced with
overwhelming odds due to the
fact that they lacked depth
this year. Ken Kohler, two
year letterman and sidehorse
veteran did not make the trip
due to illness. Phil Hall, Ne
braska's only competitor for
the all-around trophy sudden
ly became ill while making
the trip and Chuck Ellis saw
very limited action because of
a sustained knee injury.
Coach Geier stated that El
lis put forth the greatest indi
vidual effort for the sake of
the team that he has ever
seen. Dick Byers, led in the
rope climb with a time of 5.4
seconds until the last round.
Then a member of the Air
Academy topped Byer's mark
with a time of 5.2 seconds, and
was a cinch to win since the
only other eligible man to
compete against this was the
injured Ellis.
Coach Geier goes on to say
that Ellis walked over to the
rope with a very determined
look on his face. He sat down
in the starting position with
his hands on the rope and
waited for the starting signal,
all the coaches present
thought it impossible for Ellis

Nebraska wiht a 5-7 tally
so far in the Big 8 standings
and a 12-11 record for the
Season and is looking forward
to staying above the .500
mark for the year as they
host the Oklahoma Sooners
Thursday night.
Herschell Turner will also
be shooting for the individ
ual high scoring record for a
season at Nebraska set by
Jim Buchanan in 1951-52.
Turned will have to top the
400 point mark and by obtain
ing 9 points in the Sooner
game he can lift his 392 to
tal past the magic mark.
Sooners Are Third
The Sooners will be looking
for vengence since they have
been dropped from the sec
ond place slot to a third place
tie with K ansas in the league
standings due to a heavy loss
at Colorado, 73-56. In that
game, Colorado hit 55 of
its field goals and took and
held control of the game from
the mid-point of play to the
finish.
Oklahoma will be backing
up one of its star perform
ers, Dennis Price, a 6-1 guard
who can move into the post
or work out of the corners.
Being a hustler seems to be
the most impressive of
Price's several roundball as
sets. Oklahoma Coach Doyle
P a r r a c k will have Joe
Thompson and Bill Ham
mond at the two forward
starting positions. Thompson
and Hammond are at in
equal stance of 6-6. Jack
Marsh will be starting in the
center slot at 6-7.
Dennis Price and Raymond
Lewis will round off the start
ing line-up for Thursday night
in the guard positions.
In Nebraska's last game
with the Sooners, it was Lewis
who hit six straight charity
tosses towards the last of he
game to put the game on ice
for the Okies. Previous to
this, Price was responsible
for the turning point in the
game as he pulled Oklahoma
from behind to a one point
lead with a successful free
throw. Herschell Turner and Al
Maxey led the Huskers in the
point department as Maxey
hit for 18 points while Turner
had 13.

to beat the previous mark set
by the Air Academy since he
would have to keep his injured
leg stiff and it would tend to
make him lag.
Good Start
Ellis made a beautiful start.
He skimmed up the rope in
such a rapid time that he not
only won the event but made
sure and won a very decisive
first in the event with a time
of 4.7 seconds.
Coach Geier stated, "this is
not the kind of thing you can
buy anywhere."
The odds against Nebraska
were very large since Nebras
ka had only 5 men competing
and one of them saw only lim
ited action in comparison with
at least ten men to each of
the other competing teams.
Geier believes that next year
Nebraska will not only have
good quality but good quanti
ty also. He will only be losing
two seniors next year and he
has great expectations from
this year's freshmen.
