Animal research physiolo

proved it is possible to de
tect bloating in animals by
means of a small FM trans

about an inch in diameter
and six inches long. It con
tains a transistor, with pow
er supplied by an ordinary
flashlight battery, enclosed
in a polyethylene case.
When any pressure
changes occur in the stom
ach of the animal, the
change pushes one end of
the transmitter and sends
an impulse to the recorder
in the laboratory.
Since transistors need no
wires, a good picture of an
animal's normal stomach
pressures can be deter
mined, according to Dr.
Loyal Payne, associate pro
fessor of animal pathology
and associate physiologist.
Cattle in which the small
transmitters are placed are
put on pasture, using the
pasture fence as a receiv
ing antenna. So far, no dis
turbances in the experi
mental cattle have been
noted.
Animals selected are us
ually about ready for
slaughter since this is the
only way the device can be
recovered. It is usually left
in the animal about three
weeks.
