Language Prof Carter Quits
Former Dept. Chairman to Take Illinois Post

Boyd Carter, professor of
romance languages for the
past 13 years, is resigning
irom uie university staff.
His resignation becomes
effective Sept. 1, 1959, when
he leaves to become a profes
sor of romance languages at
Southern Illinois University
in Carbondale, 111.

"We chose Carbondale be
cause it is close to St Louis,
my wife's home, and within
a day's drive of my home in
Virginia," Dr. Carter said.
Dr. Carter came to the Uni
versity In 1945. Two years
later, he met and married
another Spanish enthusiast,
who was teaching school in
Wilber.
"Sha't my research help
er," he laughed. "She got her
masters degree in Spanish!

condensed form in the Read
ers' Digest and was trans

ish. An honorary paratrooper,
Carter was made an honorary

academic achievements.

students, Dr. Carter said,
"My impression is that the
students have become much
more serious since Sputnik."

The Faculty Senate offi
cially approved 23 new Uni
versity courses in their meet
ing Tuesday.
Paul Meadows, professor of
sociology who presented the
report of the committee on
duplication of courses, said
this was about the same num
ber as was approved last
year.
Changes in title, course de
scription or prerequisites for
50 courses was also approved
by the Senate. Eleven courses
were dropped from the Uni
versity curriculum.
Mrs. Irma Lasse, assistant
registrar, stated that many
of the courses were dropped
to meet the needs of the
changing times and to keep
the curriculum constantly up
to date.
