Nebraska Topples Rated Marquette Buslimcn By George Mover Three in a row That's where Nebraska's fighting Cornhuskers stand this morning after downing a tall Marquette team 62-60 in a nip and tuck battle at the Coliseum last night. Rated 14th The Warriers, rated number 17 in the nation after runaway victories over B i g Ten clubs Wisconsin and Illinois, were baying at the Husker's heals most of the night, but excepting the ear ly minutes, they coould nev er quite grab the lead. Easy Al Maxey, ex-teammate of Oscar Robertson, and Happy Herschel Turner, the Huskcrs' ball handling magi cian, led Nebraskah with 18 and 14 points respectively but they had a lot of competent help. With 18 minutes to play in the first half, Marquette had a 5-3 lead. Then Maxey took over with some deadly long shooting to pace Nebraska to the lead. Sudden Flurry The margin was a slim one until the half, when a sudden Husker flurry, gave the Big Red an apparently solid 33 26 halftime advantage. After the half, Nebraskan began their famous semi-stall tactics which brought victo ries over Kansas and Kansas State last season, and claimed a 40-30 lead. Coca Snag Third Win, 62-60 that easily. Sophomore Don Kojls led a quick Marquette rally which narrowed things to 40-39 with 13 minutes to play. Junior sharpshooter, Wayne Hester took over from there with a neat 20 footer. The locg cast pumped new life in to a Nebraska squad that looked momentarily like it might choke up with victory at its doorstep. From there on, Nebraska always seemed to have two points when they needed it. Accurate foul line work told part of the story as the Bush men made 18 of 26 free casts for 69.2 to 10 of 18 and 55.6 for the visitors. With 45 seconds to play, Ne braska had a 62-57 lead. A final Marquette desperation rally made it 62-60. Sidelights Nebraska fans behind the Marquette bench gave Eddie Hickey and his squad a rough time during the game. The assault became so bad that at one point Husker coach Jerry Bush took the public address microphone to ask the crowd to cease and desist. Eddie Hickey, the Mar quette coach, is spending his first year as the Warrior's boss. Formerly, the 5'7" bat tler was at St. Louis Univer sity and Creighton University in Omaha. At Creighton, Hickey had a national cham pionship team in 1940. You can extend courtesy too far. Billed as a running, fight ing team, Marquette was all of that. At one stretch the Warrior's fast break ac counted for six straight points before Nebraska could get their zone defense set up. The biggest and most significant thing is the elimination of the Delts from intramural action for the rest of the year. The per ennial IM powers were put on both scholastic and con duct probation as a result of a pledge sneak incident. This knocks a fair sized chunk out of the IM program. The Delts came up with top flight teams year after year. But, punishment is punish ment, and this time it's going to hurt in a pretty big way. Conduct As long as we're on this conduct subject, we might as well say that conduct has been a lot better this year than it has been in a while. Since the list of conduct pro's has been displayed on the bulletin board in the PE building, the number of violators has decreased. The first list that was posted last year contained a whole page of typewritten names. This year's roster in cludes only about eight or ten names. Intramural director Ed Hig- genbotham says that publish ing the list of conduct pro's, better officiating of intramur al events, and the new sports- Intramural League Standings Leaf in t A Sigma Phi Epsilon 3 0 Phi Delta Theta 2 0 Delta Upsilon 2 1 Alpha Tau Omega 1 1 Beta Theta Pi 1 2 Phi Kappa Psi 0 2 Sigma Chi 0 8 League t A Deita Tau Delta 3 0 Sigma Nu 2 0 Phi Gamma Delta 1 1 Alpha Gamma Rho 1 1 Theta Xi 1 2 Farm House . . 12 Kappa Siima 0 3 League 3 A Sigm Alpha Epsikm 3 0 Alpha Gamma Sigma 2 0 Ag Men 2 1 Beta Sisma Psi 1 2 Sigma Alpha Mu 0 2 Brown Palace 0 2 League 4 A Acacia .3 1 Pi Kappa Phi 3 1 Pioneer 2 1 Cornhusker 2 1 Zeta Beta Tau 0 3 League 5 A Hitchcock 2 0 Gus I s 1 1 Canfield 0 1 Benton 0 3 League C A MacLean 3 0 Seatnn I 2 0 Andrews 1 2 Seaton II 0 2 Burnett 0 2 League 7 A Selleck z-o Bessey .....1 0 Manalt 1 I Boucher 1 2 Avery 0 2 League I A flooding 2 1 Kies.selbach ...2 1 Van E - League f Phi Ensilon Kappa 2 0 Chemist - Navy ROTC 1-2 Oeolographers 1 J Physics Ilepl 0-1 Dental College 0 2 League in Hie Scholars ' - M Street 3 1 Newman Club , i Wesley House I ; Road Runners Alpha Tau Alpha J-J Southsiders i Economists 0 0 i,eague H It Phi Delta Theta 2 - J Delta I'psilon 2 1 Beta Theta Pi 2 - 1 University Flying Club MEETING December 9, 1958 union airport 7:10 Members and Vfiiton Urged to Attend. "When the fellows know they're being watched and rated on their sportsmanship" said Higgy. "they watch themselves a little more." I've noticed that there seems to be quite a bit less illegal action going on in In tramurals. There are fewer ineligible players trying to sneak in the ranks under assumed names. Intramural officials keep close tabs on such action, and when they nab a culprit here or there, it serves as ample warning to any would-be violators. Indoor track meet will be next week. Tuesday the 16th is the day. Handball pairings are put up on the board. Players should get down to the PE building to check their matches.
