Thursday night, November
20. Coach Jerry Bush will un
veil the 1958-59 edition of the
Nebraska basketball team t
the annual varsity-freshman
game on the Coliseum
maples.
The game was originally
scheduled to be played on
Friday night, but because of a
conflict with the Kosmet Club
show, Coach Bush moved the
game up a day. The contest is
slated to start at 7:30 p.m.
The freshmen are reported
to have good height and will
probably give the varsity a
tight contest.
The varsity will include sev
eral new faces from last
year's freshman team. One
of the outstanding candidates
Is Albert Maxey, former team
mate of Oscar Rob e r t s o n.
Independents
Give AUF $175
Approximately $175 has
been turned in to AUF follow
ing the independent drive this
week.
This amount is lower than
the goal that was set, said
chairman Sue-Ann Schnabel,
but not all of the money has
been turned in.
She added that fewer stu
dents voluteered to collect
donations this year than in
the past and not all inde
pendents could be contacted.
Those who were not reached
will be contacted by letter.
Some 800 students were con
tacted before Friday when
the drive ended.
Maxey and Robertson played
together on the undefeated
Crispus Attucks high school
teams of Indianapolis, In
diana. Maxey gained all-state
honors his senior year. Other
sophomores include: Jim Ko
walke, Sioux City, Iowa; John
Cahill, Dakota City; Dick
Shipwright, Pender; Dean
Prazak, Clarkson; Elmer Wa
lin, Lincoln; Mel Harmon,

I played my first Nebraska
Ball game last week. It's a
fascinating game. The ball is
twice as big as your team's
two tallest players. When it
comes over the net you duck
and hope someone else will
be brave enough to hit it.
Unfortunately no one on our
team was. All this after sit

The last thing on the minds
of 23,000 Parents Day custom
ers who trudged into Memor
ial Stadium last Saturday was
the possibility of the Busk
ers' upsetting their fearsome
opponents. Most were think
ing of Pittsburgh's recent
win over Notre Dame and its
tie with Army, and of Ne
braska's lacings at the hands
of Purdue, Syracuse, and
Missouri.
They foresaw only another
long, futile afternoon for the
Nebraskans.
Potent Offense
The gloomy fans forgot that
the week before Nebraska had
shown a surprisingly potent
offense while losing to Kans
as, that the Huskers were for
the first time in weeks operat
ing at almost full-strength,
and that NU's seniors few
but outstanding were making
their last home appearance.
They even forgot that ear
lier this season the Huskers
had tripped another Eastern
power, Penn State, on the
same field.
So 23,000 Husker fans re
ceived a shock from which
many of them are still re
covering. Nebraska, trampled by two
non-conference opponents and
nandea a series ot so-near-and-yet-so-far
losses in the
Big Eight, came back with
a 14-6 triumph that burst
Pitt's Orange Bowl bubble
and added another thrilling
chapter to the annals of Corn-
husker football tradition.

A daring passing attack
that produced both NU touch
downs, and an alert pass de
fense that twice intercepted
Panther aerials and batted
down countless others in the
closing minutes. And the
sheer durability of the Husk
ers, who would limp off the
field only to return moments
later to the bruising battle.
Who did it? Twenty-three
fearless Huskers with a will

BUI Jennings, NU coach,
was, for the first time in sev
eral weeks, a relaxed ma
after the game. He munched
contentedly on an apple.
"There's nothing like win
ning," he said. He explained
the surprising Husker vic
tory, contrasted with losses
to less powerful teams, as be
ing due to the improved phy
ical condition of the squad
and the absence of costly mis
takes from the Huskers' play.
(Nebraska did not fumble,
have a pass intercepted, or
lose a yard on penalties.)
Fine Tribute
He added that the game
was "a fine tribute" to the
seniors on the squad, who had
worked for years to bring win
ning football back to Nebras
ka. The players gathered in the
locker room after the game
to sin" a rousing chorus of
"The '..-arlet and the Cream"
to tired and smiling coaches.
The old Cornhusker spirt, it
seems, is a thing of the past,
after all not.
