Dennis Emanuel
'Star of the Week'
By Charles Coffin
Dennis Emanuel, who
played his first two years of,
varsity football back in the
days of Bobby Reynolds, is,
at 25, an "old-timer" on this
year's unusually young Ne
braska team. His typically
alert, jarring play against
Colorado last Saturday has
earned him the Daily Nebras
kan "Star of the Week"
award.
Emanuel lettered for the
Big Red as a defensive end
in 1951-52, then left school and
entered the army. He was
stationed in Germany, where
he played two seasons of
service ball, receiving his dis
charge in 1956. After working
for two years on his father's
farm near North Bend, he re
turned to NU this fall.

DENNIS EMANUEL
from a two-platoon to a one
platoon game during his ab
sence, and 6-1, 200-lb. Eman
uel found he was more serv
iceable under the new system
aa a gueuu.
This season, the last in
which he'll be eligible, he's
been blocking and tackling
ferociously, and snatching up
enemy fumbles like a young
ster raiding a watermelon
patch.
Opening practice sessions
were rough for Dennis this
fall after his long layoff, but
he says that now the bumps
and bruises of Big Eight com
petition don't bother him any
more than they used to. "Ac
tually," he points out, "at 25
you're supposed to be at your
best, athletically."
Emanuel says he, too, ha:;
noticed the "oneness" and
absence of dissention on the
squad which other players
have commented on. And the
polite, unassuming lineman
seems himself to be a big rea
son for the team's unity.
Comparing this year's edi
tion of the Scarlet with NU's
entries in the early fifties,
Emanuel says the 1958 Husk
ers lack the size of the Reynolds-era
teams, but have out
done them so far in spirit.
"There was a lot of desire to
win in the Colorado game,"
he emphasizes. "We were hit
ting them hard." (Underdog
NU repeatedly jarred the ball
loose from Buff runners and
blocked two kicks in a well
fought 27-16 defeat.)
Dennis at one time thought
of coaching as a career, but
lost interest in the profession
while he was out of school.
Being in the army,, which he
says "makes you realize what
an education means, con
vinced him, though, that he
should go back to college.
He's now majoring in geology,
and hopes to get a job with
an oil company when he grad
uates. Wedding bells sounded for
the Husker star this summer.
His pretty wife, Joanne, is a
teacher at Sheridan grade
school in Lincoln.
Texas No. 81
It seems as though no. 81
is the magic number on the
University of Texas football
team.
Maurice Doke, who at 18
was a star sophomore end on
the Texas eleven last year,
wears jersey no. 81, the sam?
number worn by three Texas
U. All-American wingmen
Joe Parker, 1943; Hob Bech
