SUMMER NEBRASKAN
JULY 24, 1958
Upkeep Takes 250 Men
Of the 250 men employed
by the University's Division
of Buildings and Grounds,
about 30 are University stu
dents. And, in the words of Charles
F. Fowlei , director of the
Division, "many of them are
gaining practical experience."
For example, often the stu
are able to do some
type of work that relates to
their college work.
Some engineering students
work in the Division office do
ing inking, graphing, and oth
er similar jobs. Others, such
as As majors, often work on
some of the University's ex
perimental grass plots or in
the college tree nursery.
"We usually assign the stu
dents to either the city or Ag
campus at the beginning of
the summer to do routine
work. Most of them do cus
todial or maintenance work,"
Fowler said.
"But if a real big job comes
up, we call in all of the men
to work on it.'

sity's many lawnmowers.
Others trim trees and hedges,
water lawns, and help repair
parking lots and streets.
. Most of them work a full
40 hour week. But about 30
per cent of them, who are
carrying summer college
hours, usually work about 15
hours each week.

Get Out The Brooms, Men
Some 85 campus custodians
are just entering their busiest
part of the year, according to
Charles F. Fowler, Director
of the Division of Buildings
and Grounds for the Univer
sity. He said that the custodians
do most of their work in Au
gust and early September giv
ing the buildings their final
cleaning before the fall stu
dents move in again.
The Division of Buildings
and Grounds normally has a
maintenance crew of around
250 persons, Fowler said.
These include the custodians,
telephone operators, painters,
carpenters, workers on the
staff and the men who work
on the grounds.
He said that some of the
buildings are closed during
the summertime and don't
need day to day cleaning. The
custodians only have to clean
these buildings before they
open again in the fall.
"I certainly do appreciate
the summer students using
the sidewalks instead of cut
ting across the corners and
killing the grass," Fowler
said. "It will save us a lot of
work this fall."

Lose A Location, Gain A Cesspool
The old Student Health
Building is slowly being dis
lodged from its home in the
center of the campus as the
first phase of its journey to a
new home at 48th and Adams.
Funds for moving and
building a foundation for the
building, now owned by the
Lancaster Association for Re
tarded Children, were ob
tained from anonymous
donors. More funds are
needed, LARC officials said,
to obtain a furnace and a
cesspool.
