Kansas Has Big Eight Throne;
Scarlet Likely Crown Prince
. . . Help Needed From Others
By Randall Lambert

Nebraska's undefeated in
door and outdoor track team
will be out to end the six year
reign of Bill Easton's Kansas
Jayhawks when they head
south to Columbia, Mo., for
the Big Eight outdoor track
and field championships Fil

top flight performances and
help from other conference
teams in some of the distance
events and field events where
the Jayhawks are strong.
Where Gardner
One of the big question
marks in the Husker picture
is where to run Keith Gard
ner. Gardner has run the
hundred in 9.6 on a wet track,
the 220 in 21.1 after slowing
down when he misjudged the
finish line, the 440 in 46.6, sec
ond fastest quarter in the na
tion, and the 120 yard high
hurdles in 13.9, the fastest
time in the nation. There is
a good chance that Gardner
may run the 120 yard highs
his pet event, and the 220 yard
dash. If he ran the 440 there
would be too little recovery
time between the highs and
the quarter. Gardner will also
probably run legs in the 440
and mile relays.
Gardner will receive stiff
competition in the highs from
Gene 0 Connor of Kansas
State, Bill Tillman of Kansas,
Henry Wiebe of Missouri, if
he recovers from an injury.
and teammates Bill Marten
and Keith Young. Tillman has
run the highs in 14.1. O Con
nor, who is slowly rounding
into shape, beat Tillman In a
dual and has been down
around the 14.2 mark several
times this spring. Keith
Young, who could finish as
high as second, and Bill Mar
ten should pick up points for
Nebraska.
Rough 220 Field
The 220 will probably p i 1
Gardner against Orlando Haz
ley of Oklahoma State, Dee
Givens of Oklahoma, Charlie
Tidwell of Kansas, and Ken
Covert of Oklahoma State
Gardner was timed in 21.1
while beating Hazely. Covert
has been timed in 20.6, while
Givens ran a 220 leg of a re
lay in 20.3. Hazley and Tid
well have dipped down to
around :21, but Tidwell will
probably pass up the furlong
in favor of the low nuraies
because the two events are
run close together.
Keith Young will be hard
pressed to maintain his un
defeated record in the 220
lows when he goes to

I for one believe that sum

convinced me thoroughly.
I guess only "I'm neat, I

stand the hot weather! (right,
spook?)

teams and livened up the park
for a while.
Naturally, being so athletic,
I struck out at bat and prac
tically got killed playing first
base. I was just standing there
by the base which was a stick
hammered into the ground,
when this huge blob of a man
came charging up, tripped
over the base (which stood up
about four inches), and
knocked me flat. And, if that
wasn't enough, after we got
back on our feet, he kicked
me in the leg in his rush to
second base. That would
make any star softballer
throw in the towel . . so I
retired to the sidelines for the
remaining innings.
Marlboros, Anyone?
One of the newer sports
around campi these days is
called Marlboro madness. I
hope the contest doesn't re
sult in any bloody warfare,
but it's really off to a roaring
start.
Anyone standing around
holding an empty Marlboro
back is seriously in dire danger.
the blocks on the 220 yard red
shale straightaway. Standouts
include three Jayhawks Bill
Tillman, Ernie Shelby, and
Charlie Tidwell, team mates
Bill Marten and Bill Hawkins,
and defending champion Gene
O'Connor of Kansas State.
Young's best time was against
Michigan State Saturday when
he was clocked in 23.8 on a
curve. On tne ziv straignt
away Shelby has hit 23.1 and
Tillman has done 23.7, while
teammate Charlie Tidwell,
who is national prep record
holder in the 180 lows, has
been timed around :23 sec
onds in practice. Young should
better his time on the straignt
away. Pollard To Be Pressed
Ken Pollard, who has been
over 14 feet five times this
year, will be pressed to win
the vault by a trio of vault
ers including indoor co-champions,
Bop Davis of Missouri
and Aubrey Dooley of Okla
homa State, and Joe Webb al
so of Missouri. All have been
over fourteen feet this spring.
Mike Fleming, improved
sophomore middle distance
man, may have trouble even
placing in the 880 and mile.
Fleming will be opposed In
the mile by Sooner Gail
- , Y vaan 'WWlwl.5iit,:CTi
Hodgson, who has been under
4:10, Tom Skutka, indoor
mile king from Kansas, Ver
lyn Schmidt, Jayhawk who
ran second to Skutka Indoors,
and another Kansas product,
Dale Lubs, who finished in the
money indoors.
Mulling Nipped
Joe Mullins indicated that
he may be ready to bid for
the his first outdoor crown m
the 880 when he was nipped
by Dave Lean of Michigan
State, defending Big Ten out
door 880 king. Lean was timed
in 1:52.7 as he nudged Mul
lins. Teammate Mike Flem
ing, with marks of 4:15.2 in
the mile and 1:50.8 while run
ning an 880 relay leg, will
furnish competition along with
Gail Hodson of Oklahoma,
Bob Tague 1:54.9 indoor
champ from Kansas, Tom
Burch of Oklahoma State and
Bob Ringo of. Oklahoma who
have run close to 1:52. Skutka
and Lubs of Kansas are also
indoor place finishers who
oculd grab the half mile prize.
There are also hopes that Ken
Ash, sophomore from Omaha,
who has been running the half
in 1:55 and Knolly Barnes
who placed indoors might im
prove and pick up points in
the big show.

With six games to go. Ne
braska's Cornhuskers take on
the role of spoilers in a Big
bight race that has waxed
ferocious.
The Huskerg travel to Nor
man, Oklahoma to take on the
Sooners in a trio of contests
vital to the men from the land
of red dirt and black oil.
Oklahoma is second one
game behind Oklahoma State
and a sweep of the Nebraska
series is a must for the Soon
ers. Oklahoma State will meet
Iowa State's stumbling Cy
clones and the Cowboys ap
pear fairly certain of at least
two wins. If Nebraska could
take two from Oklahoma, it
would deal a severe blow to
the Sooners' pennant hopes.
Huskers Seek Revenge
The Huskers are aching to
do just that too. Last year,
Husker aces, Charlie Ziegen
bein and Dwight Siebler were
both beaten by the Sooners
in Lincoln. Siebler pitched a
no-hitter while losing 2-1 and
Ziegenbein gave up only two
hits in nine innings while fall
ing 4-2. Nebraska would like
to take a little revenge for that
pair of defeats.
Indications are that Nebras
ka's hitting will not be so in
adequate this year. The Husk
ers' Gene Torczon, Larry
Lewis and Jim Kane all lim
bered up their batting eyes in
the Kansas series. Torczon in
particular came to life, blast
ing two home runs, his first
since Nebraska's spring tour.
Big Gene leads the club in
runs batted in with 26 and
homers with four. He is tied
for the batting lead with Lew
is at .338
Kane has improved stead
ily this season and is now
hitting a solid .315. The Wis
ner senior started oat well
down In the .200 levels.
Siebler still leads Husker
pitchers with a 6-1 record.
The big right-hander struck
out 13 while going seven in
nings against Kansas Satur
day. Siebler is likely to get
help from Lefty Hevner, who
has looked like a regular in
his last two outings though he
has failed to win.
