Tuesday, April 15. 1958 The Daily Nebraskan Page 3 i Spring Drills Open To Sunny Weather; Personnel Problems At least the weather was nice. That's one way for Husk er football fans to view the opening of spring drills at the University. Bill Jennings and a big crew, 73 Huskers, toil ing under a bright April sun Monday, but what the soft spoken Husker mentor made up in numbers he lacked in experience. Included in this number were only 11 (count 'em) freshmen and eight letter men. Returning "are end Mike Lee, fullbacks Carol Zaruba and Dick McCashland, tackle Duane Moneerson. Quarter backs Harry Tolly and Roy! Stinnett and halfbacks Max Martz and Larry Naviaux. Martz and McCashland showed well as an end and a center respectively last fall. The two vets have been shifted to their new positions for spring ball and Jennings warned of further shifts to come. "Well have to see what we have and we may do some more shifting," he said. Jennings remained non committal on the Ilusker's basic offense. "We will ex periment a good deal, but you can count on seeing more passings. Our backs will throw a lot more and ur ends will have work on their offensive ability," Jen nings said. In spite of the fact Jen nings didn't name the Big Red's primary offense, Husk er centers were practicing the single wing pass Monday, Moreover, the basic person nel roster released by John Bentley has the players listed in such titles as Weak Side Tackle, Wingback, Tailback, and Strong Side End. This could indicate either the sin gle wing or the winged T. According to the Hsuker mentor, much coaching will be devoted to upcoming soph omores. Last year's squad men will also have an oppor tunity to move into the many gaps in the Husker lineup. One encouraging liote was sounded by Jennings Monday. "At least we have better team speed than we did a year ago," he said. University Spring Football Roster J Skirts In Left Ends Marts, Mai . ... lull. Iumwl Bulnorna. LeKar Kttrkm. Kvfcrrt .. Oaararek. The purpose of this clinic is not only to brief participants for the tennis tournament to be held a week from Thursday. Any other interested per son may also attend the Clinic to learn more about tennis. New Tournaments Two new tournaments will begin next week. Badminton starts next Monday, with games being played Mondays and Wednesdays at 5 and 5:20 p.m. The softball tournament begins a week from Tuesday. x Personally ... The time between these columns is becoming greater! There is hope that in the future it may disappear completely, but I'm still attempting to get the news in once a week With spring and all having arrived, everyone is sure to feel more athletic (maybe even me). Then girls' sports won't be neglected! We're still golfing. Or whatever it is the class is working at. Today we're actually going outside to practice on the University High field. At least we don't have to wear our regulation shorts and shirts out there. Girls are just too modest to walk across the campus in short shorts. Well, some of them are ... (I think). 'Course the boys sort of like the outfits, I hear. (Walking across campus, I mean). Rather tends to break up that heavy class schedule, you know. Brand Closes With Title Dan Brand. University sen ior from Believue, won the heavyweight championship of the Junior National AAU Wrestling Tournament at the Omaha YMCA Saturday night. Brand, competing under Olympic rules, pinned service man, Noel DeBerg in 4:23. Other Nebraskans scoring in the meet were Ellie Wat kins of Iowa State, from Oma ha, who won the 16014 pound title by pinning Briggs Wilson; Jerry Meyer, Wartburg Col lege senior from Plymouth, who took the welterweight title in quick time. Bruce McGilvary. ex-Oma- :ha Central grad just out of the service, temporarily for got the rules and pinned him self on a rolling fall while holding the advantage.
