Eighteen Nebraska Football Grsdders
ow Out Against Oklahoma Sooners
By BOB MAKTEL
Sports Editor
The finale of the 1957 footba'J
reason wiU find the Cornhaskers
hosting the mighty Sooners of Ok
lahoma. Bud Wilkinson's squad will te
::t to begin a new winning streak
at the Husker's expense. Last Sat
urday in Xorman the Fighting
Irish of Notre Dame snapped the
Sooners' streak at 47 consecutive
games without a setback.
The Comhuskers still have one
remaining mark to shoot at. Ok
lahoma has gone through 64 con
secutive conference games without
a defeat. Xo Big Six, Big Seven
or Big Eight conference foe has
yet defeated the Sooners during
the 11 years Wilkinson has coached
at Norman although Kansas wrest
ed a 13-13 tie at Norman in 1947
and Colorado earned a 21-21 draw
,at Boulder in the 1952 opener.
The Sooners are a solid favorite
to make it number 65 at the ex
pense of the faltering Comhuskers.
Coach Wilkinson's chief conce.n
this xeek was how his squad
would react to the Notre Dame
defeat, first in nearly five years
for an Oklahoma team, and what
would be the condition of the Scar
let turf.
"The Nebraska game means as
much to us as the Purdue opener '
did to Notre Dame," he said Mon-j
day. "We can do one of two
things against the Comhuskers, '
fall off and become a mediocre
team, or fight back, improve, and
become a better team." j
Bobby Boyd, the Sooners' souid
little alternate left half, is out of
the game with rib cartilage bruised
in the Irish loss. ;
Loss of the Garland. Texas, soon-i
omore may necessitate backfield
adjustments Saturday. Boyd hasj
scored four touchdowns, kicked his !
only extra point try, rushed S;
times for 2.5 net yards and an
average of 4.9, completed four of
six passes for 44 yards and one
touchdown while yielding no inter-1
ceptions, received two passes for
45 yards, run back eight punts for
79 yards and two kickofls for 27 j
and was tied with David Baker. al-:
temate team quarterback, for the
most intercepted forward passes. ;
The Huskers will have to watch
All-American candidate very close- i
ly. The senior halfback, who led
the nation in scoring last year, is
averaging 54 yards a carry ior
10S carries. Thomas is also a very
fine punter whose kicking kept
Notre Dame in trouble last week ;
He is averaging 39.8 yards per
kick on 30 kicks. '
The Sooner forward wall is an-l
chored by center Bob Harrison!
and guard Billy Krisher. Harrison I
is considered one of the finest!
blocking centers in Sooner history
and is a solid Ail-American can-!
didate. J
Krisher made the Sports Illus
trated All-American team last
year. He has fine speed and,
bhx-ked ahead of Thomas and Tom-;
my McDonald last season. j
Eighteen Nebraska gridders will
see action for the final time in a
Cornhusker uniform on Saturday.'
They are: Jerry Brown, Bill!
Hawkins, Marlin Hilding, Clarence :
Cook. Stu Howcrter, Don Rhoda, J
Art Klein. Jerry Peterson, Jerry ;
Wheeler, Dick Kleiber, Don Kam-j
pe. Bob Lyall, Dick Prosia, Doug
Thomas, Gene S a n d a g e, Leo '
George, George Cifra and Gene
Haman.

In Close Contest, 60-58
"Not much more can happen
than has happened to us this sea
son," coach Bill Jennings said.
He was thinking of the two
heartbreakers against Missouri and
Kansas, the fact that coach Chuck '
Mather timed his resignation the'
week, of the Nebraska game and
Notre Dame blanked Oklahoma a,
week before the Sooners are to
beat Nebraska.
Jennings said, "there's always
a chance for one team to beat an
other."
