Student
Explained By Colbert
The following is message to
the new students from J. P. Col
bert, Dean of the Division of Stu
dent Affairs:
"A modern college or university
consists of three major parts: the
campus, the faculty, and the stu
dent body. Take away any om
of these parts and the university
ceases to exist.
"Because there would be no uni
versity if there were no students,
the Board of Regents of the Uni
versity of Mebraska has designat
ed th ; here shall be a Division
of Student Affairs concerned with
the scholastic progress and gsn
1 eral welfare of the student body,
f Therefore, this Division is inter
cs.ed in students from the time
iliey enter the University until
they graduate.
' "We assist entering students in
their search for suitable housing.
We assist those students, who
m :st earn part or all of their
. college expenses, to find part-time
local employment. Our Junior Di
vision and Counseling Service,
which is within the Division of
St ident Affairs, is charged with
administering the scholastc pro
grams of all freshman students.
In other words, all freshmen en
ter the University through the
Junior Division. May I refer you
to another item in this issue of The
aily Nebraskan written by Mr.
Chatfield, Director of the Junior
Division and Counseling Service,
which explains the functions of
that Division.
"The Bureau of Instructional Re
search, which is also within the
lHallgren Describes
Special Functions
The following message about the
Division of Student Affairs is from
F. M. Hallgren, dean of men:
"One of the specialized functions
of the Division of Student Affairs
is to assist students in student "ac
tivites and student organizations.
Certain requirements are set by
the University Senate for partici
pation in extra-curricular activi
ties. The enforcement of these
rules is the responsibility of the
Division of Student Affairs. Like
wise certain principles have been
set for the operation of student or
ganizations. If you have any ques
tions concerning student activities
or student organizations the 'Staff
will be very happy to discuss them
with you.
"Another function of the Divi
sion of Student Affairs is to en
tourage students to maintain high
standards of personal as well as
group conduct, the University ex
pects its students and its organi
tations to conduct themselves ac-
tording to the very best standards
of a well-ordered sociey. It is as
sumed that all students will be
familiar with the rules of the Uni
versity and the laws of the State.
Conformity to rules and laws is
not the goal of student conduct,
however, conformity is the mini
muni acceptable standard. Stu
dent : i- encouraged to set much
hirnei standards for themselves.
It is the responsibility of the Divi
sion f Student Affairs to discipline
students who violate the standards
of acceptable conduct. If you have
any questions concerning student
conduct, the staff will be very
happy to discuss them with you.

Affairs
Division of Student Affairs, assists
the Junior Division s:id Counseling
Service by giving aptitude and
proficiency tests to students. The
, Bureau also is in charge of the
testing program connected with
the awarding of University schol
arships.
The Division of Student Affairs I
assists the student body with its j
activities and social affairs by '
maintaining an Events Calendar. I
! Without such a calendar there'
would be in a school of this size i
too many conflicting activities and
' events. The Division and The Stu
dent Council, working together, as
sist new student organizations to
get started and keep track of ex
! isting organizations.
"Because normal progress
through the University is meas
! ured by grades and credits earned, :
the scholastic progress of all stu
dents is very important. Although
any person who graduates from
: an accredited high school in the
, State is eligible to enter the Uni
versity, he must make normal
1 progress semester by semester in
order to remain "In school. The
Division of Student Affairs is
charged with the duty of keeping
i track of the scholastic progress of
j all students. Again may I refer
! you to another item in this issue
, written by Mr. Fowles, Assistant i
, Dean in the Division of Student
1 Affairs. Dean Fowles explains the
requirements of normal scholastic
progress.
"When a student nears the end
of his collegiate career, he begins
i to think about his first job follow
I ing graduation. The Division of
j Student Affairs maintains an ac
tive Occupational Placement Serv-,
ice to assist graduating seniors ,
make contact with representatives
from business and industry who i
are looking for college graduates.
