Next Stop-University, Then Career
Four years ago when I came to
the campus of the University I
didn't know what to expect from
this wide-eyed institution plunked
down in the middle of our state.
Four years later as I emerged,
from the Coliseum, a happy and
reportedly educated man, I still
didn't know what to expect from
the next big step in my life a
career.
But being at the University had
done some things for me which
no job, no book or no tingle man
could do for a philosopher in a
hundred years.
The school to which I had come
was something of a fostering moth
er for four years. It directed my
thoughts to fine things in life like
the drama and the literary master
pieces of the present and past
world. It smashed my dreams that
perhaps man could be a creature
unto himself. It developed my
ideals along the lines of reason
ability rather than chaos.
In simple terms the University
had lived up to its title, the "Alma
Mater."
But what can any freshman ex
pect from any institution of higher
education? He can, I believe, know
that he will be treated as an adult

first and foremost. And to deserve
such treatment he must be willing
to sacrifice the . tricks of youth.
But that our University isn't
without its fine times . . . There
will be parties and football games
and picnics and dances and social
functions and romances. There will
be opportunities of meeting the
great men of the intellectual world
who come to speak with the youth
of Nebraska. There will be chances
for diseussing personal problems
with some of the finest educators
in the country right here on our
own campus.
University life is, of course, an
experience apart from and in your
life. But foremost you will
gain from it the realization of how
much there is to know and how
inadequate we are to learn the
myriad secrets of life.
College life, all in all, is a thrill
ing and wonderful experience. i
