The curriculum of the Ag Col lege allows a student to learn how . to feed and butcher cattle, or how to cook, and sew, and at the same time how to write themes and punctuate letters, and how to read and understand the principles of government. There is an Ag Student Union, an Ag edition of the Nebraskan, and an Ag branch of the University or Nebraska Builders on the Ag Campus. The College of Agriculture was founded in 1880 when the Univer sity was established by the State Legislature under an act providing for such a college. In 1872 the Regents ordered the college to be op3r.ed. Students here may do research for teaching. On graduation froir. the College of Agriculture one re ceives a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture or Heme Economics degree after successfully complet ing four years of work. In home economics, courses are orf:red in food and nutrition, child care and development, clothing and textiles, institutional management, cY:tetics, economics, and housing a.'.d equipment. Recently becoming a field full of opportunities is a combination of home economics and journalism. Publications demand nutrition and fa;hon experts and advisers. Courses in physical and biologi cal sciences, English, and the arts are required. Students select se quences that prepare them for the occupation they desire to enter. The Agriculture Experiment Sta tion is a branch of the College of Agriculture and is a research or fact-finding bureau. It serves the families of Nebraska, a valu able service in a primarily agri cultural state, as well as numer ous industries that are closely re lated to agriculture. The function of taking new facts and methods developed at the Ex periment Station to the farm people is carried out by another branch of Ag College the Extension Service. This is a state agency and there are extension agents throughout the state. Information gathered in research laboratories in other states is also extended to the farm people by the Exten sion Service. "TOW v ANDREWS HALL is where the English and dental classes are held. EQ mm j L3 Wo 5-Year Course In Pharmacy Students interested in the art of filling prescriptions may receive their degrees from the University's College of Pharmacy. Starting in the fall of 1957, a five year program will be in effect. The first two years will be devoted to pre-pharmacy for the benefit of broadening the education and the last three years are devoted to pro 136 credit hours required for the present four-year program. A new building is now under con struction and it is hoped that it will be finished by the fall of 1957. This building will be a combina tion of Pharmacy and Bacteri ology. . Graduate work leading to the Master of Science degree is of fered through the Graduate Col lege of the departments of the College of Pharmacy, with spe cialization in Pharmaceut i c a 1 Chemistry, Pharmacology, and Pharmacy. A graduate program in hospital pharmacy, leading to the Master of Science degree, is also avail able. This course requires two of residence beyond the Bachelor of science in Pharmacy degree and an internship in a hospital. The University's College of Medi cine, which has operated in Omaha since 1902, had an enrollment last season of 360 medics, 90 new stu dents and a full and part-time staff of 20S. The entire four-year-course has been given in Omaha since 1913. To enter the College of Medi cine, a student must have at least three years of college work, or 93 semester hours in an accredited college. As a junior and senior, he has his first opportunity to observe the effects of disease, the treatment and subsequent progress of indi vidual patients. His chance to ap ply his gathered knowledge comes in the following two years of in ternsliip. 8 Years In All The young med student who re ceives his degree from the Col lege of Medicine will leave behind him four years of medical study. However, he will be directing the information and experience gained from these four years toward four more years of post-graduate preparation. The degree of Doctor of Medicine is granted under the following con ditions: 1. The candidate must be at least 21 years of age. 2. He must possess a good moral reputation. 3. He must have complied with all the requirements of admission. 4. He must have pursued the study of medicine for at least four years and must have passed all required courses and examinations of the College of Medicine. The last two years of work must have been taken in residence. 5. He must have written an acceptable paper on an examination posed by the Examination Committee at - the end of the senior year. 6. He must have written and presented an acceptable typed senior thesis. 7. He must have discharged all in debtedness to the University of Nebraska. New $25 Million Center The University College of Medi cine is growing with the addition of a new $23 million medical cen ter. This center will include nine buildings when completed. Part of these buildings will be financed by the University and the rest by private firms. This building pro gram will put the University's medical facilities on a par with those of other leading schools in the Midwest. The degree of Doctor of Medicine cum laude may be conferred upon a student who has made a high scholastic record and who, in ad dition, has in the course of his medical studies performed some original research that has been published or is in preparation for publication. Such a student must be recommended by the depart ment, in which the original work was done. Usually he must stand CFFS rs in the upper 10 per cent of his class. Alpha Omega Alpha is a medical college honorary society hi which membership is based upon scholar ship and moral qualifications. Elec tions are made from the students who have completed nine or more quarters of the four-year medical curriculum and are by unanimous vote of the active members of the chapter. American Dental Ass'n Ratifies Dental College Probably for the first time in the history of this University, one whole class got a complete men tal picture of the situation at hand. As roll was being called in P.E. 63, a dance class com posed of both sexes, one girl an swered from the dressing room stairway, "I'm here but I can't come out. My my zipper broke." Nebraska's College of Dentistry is fully approved by the Council on Dental Education of the Ameri can Dental Association and is a member of the American Associa tion of Dental Schools. It was first known as Lincoln Dental College and was founded in 1899. In 1904 it became pari of the University School of Dentistry. It became a separate college in 1918. Admission to Hie College is based on the quality of the applicant's work in his pre-dental courses and liberal arts courses, his character,; his personality, and his aptitude for and interest in the study of dentistry. In recent years, a large per centage of applicants for admis sion has necessitated presenting a comprehensive pre-dental program. A student may complete his spe cific pre-'dentsl requirements with in a two-year period. Requirements include 60 semes ter hours exclusive of physical edu cation and military science, and specified grades and hours in such courses as zoology, chemistry, and physics. If a student desires, he may sub mit his application to the College of Dentistry after he completes the two-year requirements. All students are also required to take aptitude tests after they apply for admit tance. The quota is limited to 32 freshmen. After receiving a notice of ac ceptance for admission, the stu dent is required to make a deposit of $25 which will be applied on the cost of tuition for the following academic session. It will be for feited if he fails to register for that session. Each student who enrolls in the College of Der'istry pays a fee of $355 each Semester. This covers the major expenses for the period. All required textbooks, dental instruments, and materials are loaned for the student's use during his four-year dental training. Upon completion of the course snd the conferring of the D.D.S. degree, all textbooks and instruments become the property of the student. Omicron Kappa Upsilon is the honor society of the Dental College. Alpha Alpha chapter was chartered at the University in May, 1929. Election to this society is based upon scholarship, conduct, and data gathered by the faculty and recorded on a character analysis chart.
