Construction
On New Union
To Begin Soon
Summer school students next
year will be able to enjoy the
benefits of the proposed new Union,
long under consideration, and now
nearing reality, according to
Duane Lake, Union manager.
Oct. 2 has been set as the date
for construction to begin.
The million and a half dollar
addition will extend over the pres
ent parking lot behind the Union,
turning the Union around so that
the main entrance is on S street,
Lake said.
The most interesting part of the
new building from the students
point of view is the fountain
lounge area.
The addition will combine the
two present areas so that the ex
panded Crib will provide different
types of seating around circular
tables.
Provision is being made for a
game area which will include 10
bowling lanes, 12 billiard tables
and 10 ping-pong tables and a
chess and card room.

'School In Good Position'
Superintendent Claims
"Public education has never held
such an advantageous position and
may never again," according to
Dr. S. P. Marland, superintend
ent of schools at Winnetka, 111.
Addressing Nebraska PTA mem
bers attending a home-school re
lationships clinic at the University
Monday afternoon, Dr. Marland
said the public is ready to accept
the leadership of the schools and
to spend money for better educa
tion. He said the public is ready to be
lieve what educators have been
saying that schools are at the
heart of free men and that schools
belong to all people and are the
responsibility of all people.
There are many problems facing
the school, he said, and the school
men alone cannot solve them.
There must be a partnership be
tween the schools and the com
munity. This joint body of professional
educators and laymen will reach
the right decision if that decision
Is sound and somewhere between
the positions of the educator and
layman, he said.
Dr. Marland asserted that the
progress of the school rests with
the readiness and faith of the com
munity and pointed out that in the
community there are laymen wil
ling to sacrifice their time and
energy to bring their speciali7ed
talents to bear on the problems
in education.
He said that every school admin
istrator wants to improve his ed
ucational product and is not satis
fied to put the same product
fore his students."
