Iowa's Hawkeyes and Nebraska's
Cornhuskers open their respec
tive cage seasons Saturday at
Icwa City and at the same time
will open the NCAA's Basketball
Came of the Week.
At 2 p.m. Saturday, Jerry
Bush's cagers will appear on your
local television set.
Bush has named a starting line
up that includes two seniors,
Chuck Smith and Norm Coufal,
one junior, Rex Eckwall, and two
sophomores, Lyle Nannen and Don
Smidt.
Smith is a two-year letterman
and a regular for the better part
of those seasons is co-captain and
the team spark. Chuck stands only
6-1 but grabs a good percentage
of therebounds.
Coufal is the steadying influence
for the Bushmen with his poise
and accuracy.
Eckwall, tabbed as one of Ne
braska's greats as a freshman, is
living up to these advanced notic
es. His near-perfect timing allows
him to sweep the boards against
tnller opposition. Ke and Smith pro
vide rebounding strength even
though they do not stretch into the
stratospheric regions as do most
of their contemporaries.
Nannen is a smooth-shooting 6
foot 3 inch soph who crashed into
the first five after co- captain
Whitey Buel suffered a pre-season
crackup. He edged out Gary Reim
ers, another soph, at the first of
this week.
Smidt is probably one of the smal
ler pivot men in captivity, al

The Nebraskan learned Thurs
day that Bill Glassford's successor
has been "picked-"
Though there has been no offi
cial contract between the Univer
sity and this coach, reliable sourc
es have revealed that a contract
ual agreement actually exists be
tween a "group of interested indi
viduals" and the next coach.
Informed Lincoln sources say
that the coach reached in this in
formal agreement is Pete Elliott,
backfield coach at the University
of Oklahoma and former Michigan
University football star.
According to authoritative infor
mation, the contract seems to be
an option which stipulates that the
prospective coach (Elliot) cannot
negotiate any other coaching obli
gations until he is either hired
by the University or released
from this present commitment.
This legal agreement is known
to have been in effect for some
time, possible for three or four
weeks, available contacts disclosed.
Whether or not the University
wiil formalize this agreement and
hire Elliot remains to be seen.
Some people close to the athletic
department have speculated that
Bill Orwig's confidence in hiring
a coach by Jan. 1 could be, in
part, based on this contractual

Intramurals had a slight rest
with vacation, but the schedule of
tournaments is now back in full
force.
The finals in duckpins will be
held this Wednesday night. The
Alpha Omicron Pi's will be trying

tramural swim meet last Wednes
day evening. The swimming Fijis
scored a total of 42 points as
they finished 15 points .ahead of
second place Phi Delta Theta
which scored a total of 27 points.
The Fijis managed to capture
only one first place hut scored
well in all events in accumulating
their high score. They were paced
by Monroe Usher and Paul Schorr
who together collected 30 of the
Fijis 42 points.
Individual high scorer for the
meet was Jerry Farrell. Farrell
grabbed two firsts and a second
for a total of 19 points but since
he didn't swim for a house his
points didn't count towards the

was tremendous.
The Kappa Kappa Gammas won
the swim meet which was held for
the first time this year. The
KKGs scored sixty points to run
nerup Alpha Xi Deltas Shirty two
points with Sally Laase, the only
one competing. The Kappa Alpha
Thetas placed third with twenty
nine points while Mary Ann Daly
scored twenty one points to give
the Alpha Chi Omegas fourth
place.

co-rec volleyball. Each team will
play only one game per night, and
it is a double elimination tourna
ment with Margie Edwards

show, neither affirming nor deny
ing a question as to whether he
would be Nebraska's next football

However, he did say he was def
initely "interested."
Possible official announcement of

made at a meeting scheduled late
Monday afternoon by Orwig. In
a letter sent to all members of the
football team, Orwig said he want
ed all players to attend this "very
important meeting."
Other observers close to the Uni
versity football scene feel the an
nouncement will be made sooner,
maybe within the next two or three
days. ..
Orwig, on a speaking trip in
Ohio, was not available for com
ment Thursday afternoon on the
University campus.
Orwig spoke at the Banquet of
Champions at Toledo. According
to statements he plans to contact
prospective coaches on this trip.
Orwig has stated that he plans to
be at Iowa City to attend the in
augural basketball game of the
Huskers against Iowa Saturday aft-e-noon.
In the mean time Elliot is in
Eloomington, Indiana, on a speak
ing engagement. Some observers
feel that a meeting to further ne
gotiations might come about.
Meanwhile many other names
have been thrown into the hat for
the position.
The latest to have been supposed
ly contacted is Ara Parseghian,
head grid mentor at Miami Uni
versity of Ohio. His current squad
was ranked number 15 in the na
tion on most polls.
Miami tangles many Big 10 op
ponents and has to its credit wins
over Northwestern this year and
Indiana and Marquette last sea
son. Word came from Oklahoma that
Sooner line coach Gomer Jones,
former Husker line coach, was
cot interested in the job.
Another name on the growing
list already mentioned is Dave Nel
son, head coach and Athletic Di
rector at. the University of Dela
ware, who recently was quoted aa
stating he was not interested in
the job and was perfectly satisfied
with his present position.
Orwig's visit to Iowa City may
also draw more names into the
picture. Four Michigan graduates
are now serving on the Iowa coach
ing staff. Orwig is also a Michi
gan grad and former coach there.
If the official announcement of
Elliott's appointment is released it
wiU end two weeks of speculation
and second guessing by the Ne
braska press and sports fans.
It will be the beginning of a new
saga of Cornhusker football.

Paul Guild, E.E., Purdue, '49,
started as a student engineer with
Long Lines the Bell System unit that
interconnects Bell Telephone Com
panies. In the student training pro
gram he became familiar with all
operations of the business.
After that he spent two years on
technical and engineering projects
that took him to Indianapolis, Cleve
land and Atlanta.
March of 1953 found Paul in Cin
cinnati working on the construction
of radio relay routes. He worked with
the newest microwave equipment that
transmits television pictures and tele
phone conversations simultaneously.
In 1955, as part of his further
development, Paul was transferred to
a completely different assignment. He
now supervises the important plan
ning job of balancing a working force
of 900 Long Distance operators with
the ever-changing work load.
-'I use my engineering background
on tills job, too," ays Paul ''It's
extremely interesting and has lots of
responsibility. Besides, you need ex
perience in more than one depart
ment to give you background."

It was learned today from re
liable sources that Pete Elliott,
backfield coach at- the University
of Oklahoma, may be Nebraska's
next head football coach.
The source stated that Elliott
has been contacted and he is inter
ested in the job. The proposition
now depends on Nebraska's mak
ing a formal offer.
Elliott, an alumnus of Michigan
University where he and his broth
er "Bump" made headlines for
Michigan's 1947 and '48 Big Ten
champions, has been previously
oeen interviewed for head coaching
positions at Kansas State and Ore
gen State.
Elliott has had a stellar career
as both a player and coach. He
went to high school in Blooming
ton, Illinois, where be won eleven
letters for athletic achievement;
three in football, four in basketball,
two in baseball and two in golf.
He attended the University of
Michigan quarterbacking Michi
gan's great 1948 football team
which beat Southern California in
the Rose Bowl, 49-0.
After graduating from Michigan
in the spring of 1949 be became
end coach at Oregon Satte. In 1952
he was hired by Oklahoma as back
field coach. During his tenure at
Oklahoma he has produced such
football AH Americans as Eddie
Crowder, Billy Vessels, Tommy
McDonald, Buddy Leake and Kurt
Burris.
Bill King, sportscaster for Lincoln
television station KOLN and a for
mer high school classmate of El
liott's, interviewed Elliott before
the Nebraska-Oklahoma football
game last November 19.
During the course of the inter
view Elliott indicated be was def
initely "interested" in the Ne
braska coaching position but said
he had not been contacted. He said
his interest centered on the belief
that Nebraska is a school with great
football potential
