These two youngsters represent America's enor
mous postwar generation -the genera tkn that is
caught in the most serious educational crisis in
our entire history. For never before have our
schools been so overcrowded and so understaffed.
Because this is a nation-wide problem, Presi
dent Eisenhower has called for educational con
ferences in every state. These meetings will report
their findings to The White House Conference on
Education, to be held in Washington, November
28 to December 1, 1955.
A 33-member Presidential Committee, repre
senting all areas of American life, is already at
work, planning for the November White House
Conference.
It is hoped that through this conference, bold
and effective solutions will be found to meet the
problem of raain taming the kind of public schools
America needs -for its strength, its prosperity,
and perhaps for its survival.
