One of the important considera

that they will have the privilege
of living in one of our fine resi

opportunity either to live in the
new Men's Residence Halls, or in
the fraternity which they pledge.;

The Chancellor
One of the truly pleasant tasks I have is to extend the hand of
friendship and welcome to the young men and women who will enter
the University of Nebraska this fall. You are the newest generation
of Cornhuskers and I am sure that you will find the years ahead of
you here on the campus challenging, inspiring and friendly. You are
now members of the great family of Cornhuskers. I am sure you will
find it a fine family.
You are coming to the University to learn. The first responsi
bility of the University is to provide an opportunity for you to learn.
The areas of study here are much, much broader than in our high
schools. In its various colleges the University offers more than 2,000
courses. The University, you see, is providing ample opportunity. How
you avail yourself of that opportunity is largely up to you. The entire
staff here will help you but you have the responsibility of carrying
out assignments without being cajoled or coaxed.
There is good reason to believe that the next few years will be
among the most memorable of your life. College years should be
productive, healthy, happy ones. This University operates to enable
you to learn more about the world in which you live, more about
yourself, and more about the society with which you will make your
way.
Our objective is a good deal more than the transmission of a
given amount of technical knowledge. The entire concept of our life
here is in America is based on the belief that the individual citizen is
intelligent, capable, conscientious, and sensitive to the difference be
tween truth and untruth and to the difference between morality and
immorality. This University is dedicated to the training of young
people whose performances will prove the wisdom of this great theory
of democracy.
We want our University to be a testing ground. It must be if it is
to serve you well. I hope you will habitually sharpen your curiosity.
I hope you will ask questions; many questions, but always with pur
pose. I hope you will develop the potential capacity you have for the
willing acceptance of responsibility. I hope you will become keenly
aware of the importance of integrity.
As I say, these next few years can be, and should be, most
memorable and happy and productive. I am very glad that you are
here to live them as a fellow Cornhusker. This is your new home and
you are welcome here.
CLIFFORD M. HARDIN
