Tuesday, April 19, 1955 THE NEBRASKAN "Traveling Along i. I i yr The Sports Trail By LEO SHEKEE JR. SjmtU Sua Writer Eren a thing like a "raid" or so called "riot" caa surprisingly enough have an athktic angle. This writer was one of about 1,500 students that witnessed the happening Thursday evening from near start to finish, As the evening pro gressed, we just wondered what thoughts were in the minds of some of the persons involved in the festivities. Specific names are not important now. Several of the participants la the battle of brawn (the men) and the battle of brains (the women) only wish that the Nebraska athletic department could have had an early "tip on the spring frolic. Much Talent ... The reason is simple. Each year the University spends thousands cf dollars travelling throughout the United States seeking athletic tal ent that wm help the Husker sports situation. All the time the talent was right in front of their eyes! j Thursday eight this talent was a dime a fistfuIL On many oc casions a by slander could see many 200-pound bodies of Herculean porportion running wild on our campus. The question is: "Why doesn't all this extra energy make an appearance on our athletic scene?" No Secret ... There is no secret that Nebraska has been on the down grade la some sports since after the war. No matter what the coaches and alumni do many of the high school standouts Just dmt make aa appearance on the fields of conquest even though they are en rolled at Nebraska. If Bud WCkinsoa, the Oklahoma bead football boss, could have seen the display of power by the students last Thursday, be would have probably canceled our scheduled game with the Comers next season. Not because Wilkinson is afraid of the Buskers or a riot because "riots are aa every week happening during football season at Norman. . The only difference between the two is that the institution of Oklahoma, athletically speaking, have a "riot" each Saturday after noon. Tbry use discretion end not a single ease of damage has been reported except some lost athletic prestige by other Big Seven schools. The University of Oklahoma and other top schools save all this surphjs energy and use it eve.y Saturday afternoon to win football games. It ius produced four straight Big Seven football tiles which Is proof enough. Recognized? . . . Another thing about the whole affair really shocked many ob servers. A few athletes, whose cames are needed to be mentioned, were connected with the evening's events. Wm is better recognised that a well known Husker athlete? During the course of the evening some of Nebraska's better athletes stood in the background and Just smiled as if to say, "I guess those fellows just don't want to'play yon name the sport) next season. Aa affitete that is reoemng help from any athletic department is "out of his mind" to risk taking a chance with such a "hat potato" as the Thursday chaos. If all the talent of runners, weigb&fiers and organizers would show their faces oext season at any one of Nebraska's four major sports our school would indeed be national champs in several sports. A Slack-Eye ... The episode was a black-eye for the Nebra&a athletes, that were recognized by students and administrators and Just another chapter in the cow popular concept t many that athletes are just "trouble raising tramps." Sorority Power ... Jvrver usderestwtate female power. The one-two punch of Cenfl flora, who u engaged to marry Staa Heatk, the farmer Nevada passing whiz, and Ariina Bart, a friendly physical education major, gsHanGy fought off She intruders by slinging empty core bottles as they streamed up Che PS Phi steps ... Besults were: two (direct bits and several ''pnteM&ieE' ... If these two misses are rigWbaaders msybe Guadb Tey Sharpe could ttse them due to bos over abundance of strong lefthanders on bis present baseball team. QUOTE CF THE WEEK: "Nebra&a stuuents shouldn't gather in groups of more than three people will start thinking that it's another riot- (words of a parade watcher.) Jensen, Moore Hot Huskers Win First Golf Match Against K-State Brown Continues Hitting Spree Husker Baseball Team Slaps Two Defeats On Lackluster Kansas State Wildcat fJne By BOB COOK , Sport Staff Writer Nebraska's bustling Hu.sk ers con tinued their winning ways as they walloped a lusterless Kansat State nine by decisive margins last week end. The Scarlet carried a big stick as they brought 28 runs across the plate in their first two conference outings. Friday the Cornhuskers smacked the Wildcats 13-2 only to return Saturday and dump their hosts 15-0. Defensive Play SpariJes Jim Cederdahl and Norm Coufal were the big men at the plate in the initial contest as Cederdahl smacked a round tripper and a pair of singles, driving in a de cisive five runs, and Coufal punched out three doubles. K -State starter Iusty Ehoades was detoured lor seven runs in the fourth frame and the Huskers were well on their way to chalk up their sixth win in seven starts. Aside from their above par showing at the plate the Big Beds were as much of a threat defen sively. The Huskers went errorless while the Wildcats made three costly babbles. Southpaw moundsmaa Dick Geier get credit for the win, yielding' only four well scattered hits. Rog er Bottorff , Lincoln port sider, re lieved Geier in the eighth. Feaees Take PtfonsUag Nebraska made it two in a row Saturday as they put a damper on K-States All-Sports Day program shuting out the Wildcats in a 15 9 margin. The Hosiers swept the series as they unleashed a violent scoring attack to lead the Kan cans by twelve tallies at the end of four innings. The Sunflower squad was never in the game after this deficit and Husker curl ers were touched for a paltry two scratch singles. Willie Greenlaw opened for the five innings, during which be al lowed only one safety. Fran Hoff raeier went three more giving up one bit and then Jim Cederdahl retired the last three batters in order. Don Brown, who is bow lead ing the Husker hit parade, bit 3 for 6 to pace the Cornhuskers at the plate, including a four bagger and a double. Ironically enough. The Huskers will play their first borne match this Wednesday when they meet Omaha U at Hillcrest Country Club. The Indian team, led by long hitting Jerry Noren, are very strong and could hardly be called underdogs against , the NU swingers. Both teams will play five men in this match. John Butterfield, who lost and then won back bis fifth position during a week of challenge rounds, will fill in for the Huskers.
