OOLOEOHOD 215 North 14th St Brown, Houfek, Giles, Dugan, Soelberg Notch Top Positions By BRUCE BRUGMANN Sports Editor The Great Stone Wall of the In tramural basketball arena was erected In only one day as five cage behemoths, averaging 6 foot 3 inches in height and totalling nearly a half a ton in weight, were named to the All-University All Star Basketball first team. Spanning 6 foot three inch Joe Houfek, Canfleld sharpshooter; 6 foot 5 Bob Brown, ATO siege gun; 6 foot 4 inch Bill Soelberg, Theta Xi pivot mainstay; the forward wall is not only well nigh unstop pah but almost unsurmountable. con ?ting the rock-ribbed honor array are Bill Giles and Ed Dugan, who normally play center or for ward, in the back court. The 'All-University aggregation was chosen by the IM managers and their teams. In the final bal loting Giles, Brown and Soelberg amassed the top number of votes with Houfek, Dugan, Al Blessing and Fred Longacre not far in ar rears. One of the finest all-star quin tets in recent years, the mythical five presents everything a coach could want in a basketball team: offense, defense, rebounding and floor performance. Wrapped up in this star-studded cage combina tion is scoring potential from every corner of the court hookshot and tip-in artists deluxe hovering about the basket and fine long shot snipers in Giles and Dugan pa trolling the out court. Rebounding is a matter-of-fact Baseball Team Moves South For 8 Games Coach Tony Sharpe's Husker baseball squad will leave on an eight-game trip Thursday at 4 p.m. First stop for the Nebraska team will be in Tulsa for a two game series .with the Oklahomans. The group will then travel on to Hous ton University, Texas University and Rice University for a two game series with each school. Sharpe said the main reason for the trip was "to get down where it's warm and practice." The Hus kers have been spending most of their practice sessions inside and have only seen the light of day five times in their practice to date. Seven pitchers will make the trip with the first starting nod being given to Wille Greenlaw or Jim Cederdahl, but Sharpe ex pects to use all the hurlers in the Tulsa University series. thing for these five, all converted pivotman, wherein lies a fine de fense. Ball-handling Is no problem to such an experienced honor bracket as this one. Brown, scoring freely from the post and forward slots, led the Taus to their second All-University title in three years. He scored 25 points in the championship game with Canfleld. Houfek, a fine set shot and driver, paced a three pronged Canfield A attack of Hou-fek-Torczon-Torczon. Giles, playing with the well-oiled Phi Delt machine, was outstanding with his floor play, rebounding and clutch performances. Dugan, usu ally roving in the back court, played the IT- i all over floor. A fine playmaker and rebounder, he could hi t from any po sition. Soel berg, h a r d working Theta X i pivot, scored con sistently and Was a pillar Of Courtesy Mncoln Journal :rength under Al Blessing the boards. Al Blessing, selected twice on the All-University first team and on the second outfit in the past four years, played his last season of IM basketball. Always a steadying unit J v in the ATO lineup, Blessing just missed a first team birth. A mem ber of the varsity basketball team for two years, Blessing competed his senior year and the three years he was enrolled in Law School. Also pushing strongly for first string accolades were Fred Long acre, Theta Chi sizzler, and La Verne Torczon, rugged middleman in the Canfield scoring trio. Always a strong candidate for the All-University ratings, Longacre, playing with a mediocre team, dropped slightly in the final polling. Brack eted as guards on the quint are Chuck Jensen, Hitchcock field gen eral, and Lyle Martin, flashy Beta backliner. CLASSIFIED ADS Part tlm evening work la available.
