In Wednesday's All University Wo
men's General Election will select
the queen and the maid of honor
for the annual Ivy Day Court, to
be held early in May.
Candidates Tor May Queen are

Candidates were-selected by Mor
tar Board from a group of girls
nominated by each organized house.
Each house was allowed to nomin
ate two candidtates. Open filings
were available for anyone not affi
liated with an organized house.
Final selection of the nominees
was made on the basis of three
qualities, judged by the members
of Mortar Board. The three criteria
used were scholarship during their
four years at the University, evi
dence of leadership in University
activities and consistency in service
and participation throughout col
lege. The candidates, all seniors, will
reign over the entire Ivy Day cere
mony. The Queen, and the maid
of honor who will be the runner-up
in the election, will be first pre
sented during the morning on Ivy
Day.

Vote To Kill Tax Cuts

Staff Writer
A close vote is expected to kill Democratic proposed tax cuts when
they come to a showdown sometime Tuesday. The proposal would
cut $20 from the income levy against the taxpayer for each dependent
except a wife. The cuts would be limited largely to those making
less than $5,000 a year. To offset the loss in revenue, the Democratic
bill would also repeal two features of the 1954 tax revision law: re
duced taxes on dividend income and faster depreciation allowances for
business firms.
Sen. Humphrey (D-Minn) has labeled the issue as being between
"the American people" and "big business corporations." However,
Secretary of the Treasury George M. Humphrey has cited the resultant
inflation as working a greater burden on the people, and called it
"misleading to argue, that (the plan) is really in the interests of the
'little fofts.' M
SAC To Meet H-Bomb Attacks
The Strategic Air Command will rot need await specific orders
to send out immediate counter-attacking H-bombers in the event of
a sneak attack against the United States, according to a firm order
handed down by the military high command.
The law states that only the President may order the use of atomic
weapons, but the order makes provision for an emergency in which the
Chief Executive might be incapacitated or isolated.
Hoover Hits Lending Agencies
The Hoover Commission has turned its "effeciency" guns on the
104 federal lending agencies. The commission, headed by former
President Herbert Hoover, reported that federal loans, guarantees and
insurance amount to $224 billion.
The report recommended that some of the agencies should be
liquidated, and others put under private-government operation with
higher charges to make! them self-sufficient. These recommendations
would save the government some $200 million, according to the report.
