Wildcats Run Past Nebraska
With 79-62 Conference Win
Unleashing a potent fast break
and tightening up their zone de
fense, the Kansas State Wildcats
cooled the sizzling Nebraska cag
ers for a 79-62 victory after the
Huskers had led, 45-41 at halftime.
A blazing first half gave Ne
braska a good start. Expecting
a zone defense, Coach Jerry Bush
put Gus Renzelman in the start
ing lineup as a threat with his
deadly outside shooting. The Scotts-
bluff senior did not disappoint
Bush as he hit six set shots
loosen up. the Wildcat zone.
This strategy, however, failed
in the second half as K-State bot
tled up Renzelman and Stan Matz
ke, another set shot threat. In
addition, the second half saw all
the Huskers lose sight of the bas
ket. The Wildcat fast break, aided
by Dick Stone's consistent rebound
ing, gave Kansas State the edge.
xseDrasxa sartea strong with a
dead sweep in the jumps and
continued their domination in the
field events to hold a 25-11 edge
Husker hopes faded, however, as
the K-Staters singed the cinders
with a resounding 47-21 sweep in
tne sprmts, -runs and relay.
Jon McWilliams again paced the
Nebraska effort with two much
needed first places. The Sidney
star leaped a creditable 22-8 in
the broad jump and skimmed the
low hurdles for a :07.1 clocking,
He then brought his night's work
to a sum total of 13 points with
a close second in he tall timbers
Miler Hugh Osmera posted the
track by kicking past Wildcat
Darl Michel in time to break the
tape at 4:35.5.
Jim Hofstetter teamed with Merle
Brestel to take blue ribbons in
the jumps. Hof easily soared 13
feet to take vault honors. Bres
el needed only a 6'1" leap to
edge his teammates Dale Knotek
and Ray Kelly. Sophomore Don
Blanc showed promise as he split
a tie for second in the vault.
Veteran Brian Hendrickson suf
fered a streak of misfortune in
the dashes. A usual point-getter,
the speedy senior dislocated his
shoulder while snagging a third
in the 60 and returned later un
der a bit of adhesive, only to lose
a shoe in the quarter.
Oklahoma looms on the horizon
as the next Husker foe Feb. 19
on the Nebraska oval.
4M Cage Standings
By BOB COOK
Sports Staff Writer
Even before the opening tip-off
an uneasy crowd of 7500 sensed an
upset.
The partisan Husker followers
did not waste their actions as the
fighting, never-say-die quintet re
sponded gallantly by branding
Colorado's loop leading Buffaloes
84 to 77 in one of the most thrill
packed battles ever witnessed on
Cornhusker maples.
Paced by the dynamic duo of
oivotman Burdette Haldorson and
deadly Bob Jeangerard, the Golden
Buffs cut loose with an opening
scoring splurge that nearly spelled
disaster for Coach Jerry Bush's
caeers.
The stubborn Nebraskans, how
ever, stayed witnin siming ais
tance, never headed by more than
an 11 point margin. A brace of
gratis tosses by Whitey Buel put
the Huskers ahead for the first
time with 6:23 remaining and their
lead was never vanquished.
Colorado opened the scoring and
quickly shot to a commanding 17-6
lead via a deadly barrage of
hooks from their lanky postman.
The Huskers found themselves un
able to rebound and realizing their
plight began to dominate the
boards over their lofty opponents
This had a noticeable effect and
the Scarlet came to life with
much needed scoring punch from
Will Fagler and Gus Renzelman
and1 began to close the gap. The
Buffs couldn't be cooled off though
and rolled on to a 43-37 halftime
edge as the all-conference center
smoked the nets for 25 points.
From there on it was strictly an
example of teamwork. Nebraska
greeted big Burdette with a col
lapsing zone defense the second
half and the skyscraping center
only added eight more to his total
Then the impossible began to hap
pen.
As the pressure mounted from
the lively group of spectators the
Cornhuskers began to whack size-

deficit.
Suddenly the game Huskers stole
the lead and were never threat
ened as they amassed 11 consecu
tive points before the bewildered
Buffaloes could retaliate. There
wasn't enough time for the Colo
radians to rally and as the smoke !
from the final gun cleared, the
scoreboard read Nebraska 84, Vis
itors 77.
'Willard Fagler played the game
of his life as he connected for 25
points and applied the brakes to
Haldorson despite a four foul
handicap the last twelve minutes.
Other key factors in the victory
were the timely set shots by Whitey
Buel, the rebounding of Rex Ek
wall and the stellar performance
of Gary Renzelman at the pivot
spot. Haidorson's 33 points took
scoring plaudits and his teammate
Bob Jeangerard added 21 to clos-
mng cause.

Bush: Now We Are 150th
'Well, this game ought to put us
about 150th in the nation," joked
winning basketball coach Jerry
Bush bursting into the Publicity
Office at the Coliseum after the
game Monday night.
Again, the personable big man
of NU basketball was the first
man off on the floor to congratu
late the Huskers after their hard
fought, last half victory. Smiling,
laughing, breaking backs with his
huge paw, the mentor said this
was one of the best games the
Huskers had played all year.
"It's hard to single out any in
dividual players," he said, stopping
momentarily in his hand-shaking,
back-slapping cycle to chat with
reporters, but added "didn't ,Bill
Rpy hit a couple of nice ones?"
Roy hit two crucial buckets during
the early second half drive.
Meanwhile, a happy troupe of
Nebraska basketball players
frolicked in the dressing room,
having successfully thrown off the
grips of a cold spell at Kansas
State. We had this one coming,
everyone seemed to say, as the
scorebook showed the quint
notched 38 of 50 charity tosses and
compiled an excellent unofficial
field goal percentage of .388.
"Well, this one at least made up
for Kansas State," muttered Rex
Eckwall, a rebounding cog in the
Husker victory. Will Fagler, who
did a fine job of handcuffing
Haldorson the second half besides
adding crucial baskets in the last
stanza drive, admitted this was
the game the team was after.
Will said he stared to play Hal
dorson defensively to his left side
to guard the Buff center's sweep
ing right hand hook. However,
will noted, he made a couple of
quick ones with his left hand,
