Dear All:
Question for all you "authori
tiea" on football. What is the nick
name of the Oregon State team?
Your reporter got answers to this
question that ranged all the way
from Ducks, to Bearcats to Drecks.
fLast name courtesy of "Dude"
D.)
Sitting in the pressbox which is
entirely -enclosed I couldn't hear
any of the roars of the crowd, but
I was told afterward that the Ne
braska rooters? BOOED their own
team. If that is what is called
"school spirit", then I am VERY
proud to be able to attend Ne
braska, cause 'Nebraska is one of
the few schools which has that
kind of 'school spirit." Also won
dered if when the crowd did cheer
for Nebraska, were they cheering
for the team coming out of the
game, or were they cheering be
cause a new team was going into
the game?
Heard a rumor that Tulaugis in
Boulder is so crowded on football
Saturdays that you have to have
a reservation to get in. Hope it
is just propaganda put out by the
owner. Speaking of Tulaugi's I
wonder how many of those who are
Saw Pev Evans, Don Glantz, and
Bill Holloran all walking down the
street together, and then realized
I was sure glad that I was just a
spectator at the games.
Nickname is the "Beavers" for
all those who are still wondering
about the question that was di
rected to the football "authorities."
Yes, I guessed wrong too!
Should be a great spectacle at
halftime this Saturday with bands
from all over the state performing
in the stadium. Some say that an
even better spectacle is seen before
the game from the porches of the
respective frats, dorms, etc.
Paragraph about school spirit
mix you up a bit? What I meant
to say was that most schools are
for their teams, and very, very
few boo their own teams.

How's this for irony?
The nation's number one rusher
isn't even listed as a first-stringer.
That's the interesting case of
Colorado's sensational young
sophomore, John "The Beast"
Bayuk, who took over top spot in
the nation with, a 183-yard night
at Arizona last week.
The 221-pound bulldozer, who
can smash over you or run away
from you with deceptive speed,
isn't the polished fullback that
Emerson Wilson is. Wilson, a sen
sation himself last year as a soph
omore when he topped the Buffs
in rushing with 591 net yards, is
a better operator in the spin se
ries so vital to a single wing
team. And he's a better defensive
player by dint of a year's more
experience.
Bayuk now has 459 yards to his
credit for a 6.7 average.
One observer at Tucson com
pared John to the famed Minne
sota star, Bronco Nagurski, after
aaturaay nigni s game. He was
Pete Somers, who was a quarter
back at Minnesota during the days
of Nagu-ski.
"Bayuk reminds me more of
another All-American fullback at
Minnesota Sheldon Biese," said
Somers. "They both run the same
way, with speed and maneuver
ability. Of course, Bayuk has the
power to run over a tackier, too,
but not as much as Nagurski had."
Bayuk, meanwhile, is taking his
suddenly-acquired fame calmly.
He has a big problem that's wor
rying him no end.
a tv vs fcv wui a a,ai biiig Jsu
before anything else," he grins.
"As far as I'm concerned I'm still
a second-stringer. I know I have
a lot to learn before I'm as smooth
as Em (Wilson) but I'm sure-going
to try hard."
There was never any question
that he'd be tough enough to play
college football.
