Approximately 1700 new students descended on the University cam pus last week, Dr. Arthur Hitch cock, director of Junior Division said. There are about 150 more new students registered than last year, which is an increase of about 10 per cent. The registering process went off smoothly, Hitch cock said, with about 125 students sent through to pull cards each hour. "The student leaders and upper classmen who helped with regis tration did a magnificent job," Hitchcock said. New Student Week activities were crowded all week. The Chan-1 cellor's Reception Friday night j was "the best we have ever had," i according to Hitchcock, who said attendance ' was approximately 1, 200. The barbecue drew the largest crowd, with about 1,500 new stud ents lining up for dinner. About 1,400 attended the new student con vocation and 400 girls saw the Coed Counselor Damsel Debut Thursday night. About 300 men at tended the Stag. Approximately 15 foreign stud ents have enrolled at the fresh men level. Ag College Barbecue "Cornhusker night" was the theme of the Tuesday evening bar becue held on Ag campus and new Cornhuskers were introduced to the coaches and the cheers of the University. Bill Orwig, athletic director, was Introduced by Junior Knobel, Corn Cobs president. Orwig introduced two new Cornhusker coaches, Jer ry Lee and Jerry Busch. Bill Glass ford, football coach, was the first speaker on the evening's program. A Tassel skit portrayed the hazards of the life of a Nebraska coed. The yell squad led the new Students in Cornhusker cheers. Religious Open House Eleven campus religious organ izations opened their doors to new students Wednesday evening. The open houses featured intro ductions, dancing, refreshments and entertainment by various stu dent groups. The program of the student houses and ministers of ' local churches were explained. Chancellor's Reception The chancellor's reception and open house in the Union were the features of Friday night's New Student Week activity. After meet ing the new chancellor, students visited the Ballroom where Jimmy Phillips and his orchestra were performing, or they watched a ma gician entertaining in Union par lors. Freshman Mixer A "Frosh Hop" brought to a close the evening activities of New Student Week. The "mixer" dance, held in the Union Ballroom, featured Cliff Dudley and his or chestra. It was sponsored by the Union and Innocents. Sunday Finale Sunday morning saw new stud ents attending church in the var ious places of worship in Lincoln. Ag campus events on Sunday af ternoon closed the week long pro gram. Classes started Monday. NU Love Library Hours Announced Love Memorial Library will re tain the same hours this year as last. The Library will be open from i 7:50 a.m. to 9:20 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 7:50 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. on Friday and Satur day. New students should bring their identification cards with them to the library to receive a library card. Students who have library cards from previous years must have the old cards validated for this year. A $1 fee will be charged to re place a lost card. Hardin Speaks Chancellor Jells freshmen To 'Learn How To Learn' Chancellor Hardin spoke to in ming University Students at a voca'tion in the Coliseum Sept. It and told them that "in a sense, we are members of the same class." Hardin told the assembly, "you are beginning a new experience, the greatest and most interest ing of your life. Part of your ex perience is to function as citizens of the community". "We want you to succeed," Har din said, "and success is dependent upon how you organ ize and manage your time. Ne braska taxpayers are putting four dollars for every one you put out. They are expecting results." Hardin expressed the Universi ty's pride in the large number of University students who finish their schooling at Nebraska. He told the new students that the UnU versity is surely one of Ameri ca's great Universities. "Participate in extra-curricular activities to the extent that you have time for your studies, Har din said. "Learn how to learn, for it will reward you the remainder of your life." Authur A.
