The brief interruption of the usual quietness came with the Nebraska State High School Track and Field Championships. It was one of the finest meets In the 52-year histor from sev eral different angles. The weath erman came through with ideal running conditions' and the ath i letes promptly responded by breaking three state records and tying a -host of others. Nearly everyone agreed It was Beatrice's dark-haired hurdler, Bill Marten, who emerged as the meet's outstanding performer. He just missed clearing the bar at 6-3 for a new state record. Iowa State Knocks Nebraska Crew Out Of Big Seven Race Iowa State's baseball team blasted Nebraska's last hopes of winning the Big Seven title by slapping the .Huskers twice over the weekend. 4-0 and 3-2. Both games were at Ames. Fran Hofmaier suffered his first loss after five straight victories in the opener as the Cyclones pounded out eight hits, including a home run. In Saturday's game Iowa State rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to edge t Coach Tony Sharpe's club. Lefty Dick Geier was the loser. Fred Seger and Jim Cederdahl, with a double and a triple re spectively, got the only extra base hits for the Cornhuskers in the two-game series. Marten skimmed over the lows in a lightning :19.8 to more than erase the record of :20.3, set a few minutes earlier by Cam bridge's all-around ace, Gaylord Bellamy. His :14.6 performance in the highs tied the mark set by Bob Berkshire, former ace at Omaha Benson and later at the University of Nebraska. An assist would have to be given to Bob Mclntyre, Omaha North's fine hurdler, in helping Marten to roar to his remark able performances. In both races the well-built Viking was just a step behind, pressing Mar ten all the way. TWO OTHER state marks were wiped off the books. Grand Island surprised many by hustling to an early lead over Beatrice, pre-race favorite and holder of the state's best time during the regular season. With the Islanders setting a furious pace going into the last lap, Marten, the Beatrice anchor man, went all out to catch Ever soll, the GI whiz, and almost did in the last 75 yards, but Duane sprinted ahead to edge the tirea Orangeman. Boys Town's Ray Williams slammed the sprints In leading his team to the Class A crown. In the 100, the speedy Negro broke the tape In :9.9, tying the record set by Dick Lambert of Kearney in 1928. He won the 220 in :22.4. Eversoll won the Gold Medal 880 in 2:00.9 while Jerry Ford of Waverly took the mile in 4:38.7, Larry White of Chappel won the 440 in :51.1 and Boys Town won the 880 relay in 1:32. In the field events Ernie Wach of Bartley heaved the shot 50 feet, 10 inches while Kearney's Jim Hansen twirled the discos in 154 feet. 5 inches. Dnane Smith of York high jumped 6 feet, inche; Bernie Randolph of Lincoln won the vault by go ing 12 feet, 6V4 inches and Omaha Tech's Bob Bass leaped 22 feet, 9 inches in the broad Jump. Fremont won the Class A golf division while the Omaha school won Class B laurels. Val ley was the tennis king. The Fremont crew, paced by the fine shooting of Phil Nelson, edged second-place Lincoln. High by fftur 'strokes. ,The Tigers carded a 499 while the Links had a 503 total. North Platte was third in Class A. Holy Name and Fullerton trailed Westside in Class B. Valley rolled up 14 points to handily win the tennis title. The small Class C school edged out ten other teams. One reached the first sack safely on an error and the other drew a free trip with a base on balls. The winners batted around in the first while they were regis tering five runs. They went scoreless-in the second frame and scored seven tallies in the third and two in the fourth frames. John Rasmnsson swung the big stick for the winners with a three for four effort and scored two runs while driving In five markers. The victors then went on to play the Delta Sigma Pi crew Regents Start Athletic Board Dissolution Move The Board of Regents an nounced they will poll the Uni versity Alumni Association and the N Club for their opinion on the dissolution of the Nebraska Athletic Board which is currently under the authority of the Re gents. Officials announced that let ters will be sent out to the .two organizations to get their direct opinion on the matter. . Then the winners tallied twice in the fifth for the winning margin and went on to hold the contenders scoreless. Schiefelbein helped his own cause by leading the victors in the hitting department with two-for-two and scoring one run. DELTA TAU Delta advanced to the semifinals- and the right to play the Sigma Alpha Epsilon nine in the losers bracket of the Fraternity A tourney via a 14-7 win over Aplha Tau Omega, who had won from Beta Theta Pi 13-7. Larry Wilson for the losers and Al Aden for the winners each gave up only 8 and 7 hits respecelvely but numerous Er rors proved to be the Tau down fall. Delta Dick Grant and Tau "Tiger" Chambers each led the hiding with two-for four. On the previous night Beta Theta Pi was forced from the playoffs by the ATO's on a hard-hitting, walk-infested af fair. Pitcher Wilson collected two hits in four times at the plate, one a round-tripper. Hans Gosch led the losers with two-for-four.
