Pelligrino, Jensen, Baker, Johnson, Evans Named On Team

A grand total ol 35 men
gained recognition today as
members of the 1954 Intramural
Independent Basketball team
Players from 19 of the 44 teams
competing in the Independent
Leagues make up this years
select group as chosen by the
teams themselves.
The All-University champions
the Dubbers led the way ' with
six men on the first four teams,
This is a surprising situation, hut
is indicative of the bench
strength that the champions bad.
Bob Pelligrino, the Dubbers s
lightening-fast forward from
Broadview, 111., was the top vote
getter of the 68 men who were
honored on the ballots. Follow
ing close behind Pelligrino v as
his teammate. Chuck Jensen,
who is the only holdover from
last year's squad.
Jensen's long side shots
coupled with Pelligrino's drive
ins gave the Dubbers the most
potent one-two combination in
play this year. Jensen toured the
courts for the Pansies last year,
a team he led to the semifinals.
Pelligrino was a hot-and-rold
shooter, but he hit below 10
points only four times this sea
son and he found the eye on one
occasion to score 32 markers for
top one-game honors in two de
partments, most points in one
game and the most field goals
in one game (16).

in their respective sports Tlurs-
day.
There were nine letter winners
on the varsity basketball team
while fifteen freshmen received
numerals from frosh basketball
coach, Tony Sharpe.
Receiving the varsity cage
awards were Duane Buel, H'il
lard Fagler, Jerry Hare, Bill
Johnson, Stan Matzke, Gary Ren
celman, Fred Seger, Chuck Smith,
Don Weber and Tom Tobin, stu
dent manager. Johnson, Seger
and Weber are the only seniors
of the group.
The fifteen freshmen honored
included John Beideck, Bruce
Brugman, Bob Cook, Jerry
Clemens, Dudley Doebele, Al
Duey, Rex Ekwall, Doug Gibson,
Terry Healey, Joe Houfek, Dale
Knotek, Fred Largen, Jim Noo
nan, Ted Westervelt, Bill Wells
and student managers Lloyd
Castner and Bill Hill.

Kitzelman Fights
In NCAA Affair
Max Kitzelman, Nebraska's
Big Seven heavyweight wrest
ling champion from Omaha, will
compete in the NCAA Wrest ang
Championships at Norman,
Okla., this week.
The meet is scheduled for Fri
day and Saturday.
Kitzelman won the Midwest
AAU junior heavyweight title in j

the tallest on the first five.
Baker probably has the most
basketball savvy of the team due
to his former playing with the
Chadron Eagles in the NCC loop
and his present-season hookup
with Bus Whitehead's AAU
Storz team.
Kenny Johnson who led a
mediocre Olive Oilers team
joins Pelligrino at the other for
ward slot while Pev Evans of the
potent Ramblers provided the
weight at the other guard posi
tion. Johnson traveled at a 15.9
points per game average to end
up fourth in the All-U scoring
and third in Independent point
making. He has equal ability to
shoot from the left or right side.

Rambler's Dirkes Ralston's short
drives would keep any defense
loose. Ralston, the shortstuff of
the first four teams could prob
ably qualify as the fastest man
on the honor roll.
Phil Haas, an All-Independent
selection in 1952, assumed the
roll of a team man this year to
feed his more prolific team
mates and consequently fell
down in votes to the third team.
Lee Dobler, a transplanted
center, holds down the forward
slot along with the Voc Ag's
Roger Bell. Ron Powers of the
Gents is stationed at the other
guard while Larry Raddle gets
the pivot position.
Football Luncheon
Slated Next Week
The Husker football squad and
its coaching staff will be pre
sented and honored at a Cham
ber of Commerce Public Affairs
luncheon on Wednesday, March
31. All Nebraska football fans
are invited to attend, but reser
vations must be made in advance
at the Chamber office.
Bill Glassford, head football
coach at Nebraska, will be the
principal speaker and will also
introduce his entire football
squad and staff. He'll also give
the highlights of the spring
practice session and will also
relate information concerning
next fall.

made by Husker officials for
Saturday's All-Sports Day which
begins with an intersquad tennis
match at 9 a.m. The weather Is
the big question mark now.
Nebraska football, baseball
and basketball coaches an
nounced their probable lineups
for participation in Saturday's
big affair. The headline attrac
tion will be the intersquad toot
ball game which is slated to start
at 2 p.m. on the Memorial
Stadium sod.
A wet drizzle forced the
Husker gridders Indoors Wednes
day and there was no worxout
slated for Thursday. Coach Bill
Glassford's team got their first
taste of spring scrimmage under
game-like conditions last Satur
day when the Reds blanked the
Whites 24-0.
It will be the same two teams
going at each other Saturday.

Chick Sutherland, basketball
coach at Iowa State for the last
seven years, resigned from his
position Wednesday.
Sutherland, however, will con
tinue on the Cyclone faculty as
a full-time physical education
instructor. His teams had won
63 and lost-88 games. In the Eig
