o Friday, January 15, 1954 Page 3 THE jNEBRASKAN In The Stands Coach's Position Strong; Groups Rally To His Side By GEORGE PAYNICH Sports Editor Granting that the recent NU player action was ill-advised and ill-timed, the fact remains that there must be something basic ally wrong with the football sys tem nere to permit such a situ ation to come about. There Is no doubt that many of the signers wish they had never heard of the matter, but still many considered it the only way to better relations between the quad and its coach. The trouble doesn't merely stem from too much work. COACH GLASSFORD S speech drew a standing ovation from the host American Leeion Post Num. l'ber One in Omaha Wednesday evening. He still Is the Husker football coach and will remain so if he desires. If he does we hope his Johnson, Weber, Seger Among Top JO Scorers Three of Nebraska's "Whiz Kids" are among the ten top scorers in the Big Seven con ference. Fred Seger is third with a 20 point average, Bill 'Johnson is fifth and Don Weber seventh. Another Husker, Willard Fag ler is eleventh with a 11.0 aver age. LEADING SCORERS 5 player-coach relations gets ironed out. His public relations seem in good order! THE HUSKER coach has proved he has many backers and has surprised his critics with his strong position. We hope the boys who signed and still have eligibility will not be too badly hurt if Glassford remains. His speech seemed to indicate that he was paving the ground for better future relations if he does remain at Nebraska. GLANCING BACK over the se mester in this our last edition we find the top athletic stories cen tering around the latest football controversies. HUSKERS JOHN Bordogna and Nick Adduci are opening a "Pi zarria" in Lincoln. Nick tells us that "joint" will open in a week with delivery service, with "the grana opening coming in about a month. The establishment will be located on North ,16th near the Elgin plant. As we say coodbve to The No. braskan and to the Universitv. we only hope we presented a fair report to all. Ed 1 Handles PA Mike NU Graduate Is Cage, Grid Announcer By GEORGE PAYNICH we wisn to remind you as you leave the Coliseum to walk safely, and If you drive, to drive safely." ..... . . "we request your co-operation In remaining off of the playing field." These classical remarks have been heard at University of Ne braska athletic events for many years. If you are as curious as we are you probably have had a longing desire to know the owner of that familiar voioe. WITH THE help of publicist John Bentley, we decided to find out something more about this mysterious figure. Mr. Bentley arranged the meeting, and we 1 discovered the owner to be Ralph Beechner, co-ordinator of Ath letics, physical education and recreation for the Lincoln Public School System. THE FORMER University of Nebraska student, class of 1930, i informed us that he got into this particular field at the beginning , of world war 11 when approacn ed by John S. Selleck, then ath letic business manager at NU, for the purpose of broadcasting Nebraska football games. After one year at the broad cast Mike Beechner switched to the public address system and has been an institution here ever since for better than ten years. BEECHNER HAS been a part of the Lincoln school system since 1930. His first coaching Job was at the old Jackson High School in University Place. From- 1937 to 1945 he was headman in football, basketball and track at Lincoln High School. From 1945 to 1950 he wag the Intramural and athletic director. Since 1950 Ralph has held his current position as co ordinator. RALPH DESCRIBES his Job as public address announcer ns "interesting but hard." "You can't really enjoy the games be cause you can't afford to make a mistake," he said. "In all the years I have been t this Job," chuckled Ralph, "I have had only one complaint. It was in the form of a letter I'rom n outstater who complained bout my pronounciation of the word athlete!" Beechner h.sn't missed a Ne braska home football or basket ball game during the last ten years. During the grid season Ms post Is way up on top of the west stadium. During the basketball season you can spot him at the scorers desk. HIS GREATEST problem i trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. "People don't want play by play reporting, but they want the necessary facts," Ralph said. It might be true that his re mark! go at times unheeded, but we still consider an athletic event at NU not formally closed until we hear Mr. Bcechner's parting words. The Guy Behind The Voice might To those who might have wondered as to the man be hind the voice at NU football and basketball games, we came up with tnis pnoto or the man at his job. Ralph Beechner is his name; he has held the post for more than ten years. (Nebraskan Photo). Schmidt dumped 12 for the Fijis and Al Deines showed up well, gaining 13 for the Nus.
