In 1907, Putnam went to Med
ford, Oregon and consolodated
three newspapers he had pur
chased. In 1910, he added another
papef to the three and formed the
Medford Mail Tribune.
Mr. Putnam remained as ed
itor of the Medford Mail Tribune
for 30 years, selling the paper
this year. He still is active in
newspaper work, retaining the
title of editor tmeritus of the
Tribune.
In 1951. Putnam received the
Amos E. Voorhies Award of the
Oregon Newspaper Publisher's
Association for outstanding con
tributions to Oregon newspapers.
This ward is not given annu
ally; only when particularly out
standing achievements merit it.
Putnam, listed in "Who's Who,"
has been cited for his outstanding
work and writing on behalf of
freedom of the press in a book by
George Turnbull.
He is paying a "last visit to
the University chapter and at
tended the 64 annual initiation
ceremony held Sunday at the Lin-
coin Hotel.

Dr. Dudley Ashton, chairman of
the University physical education
department for women, will give
a demonstration on ball handling
at the meeting of the Nebraska
Association of the American Asso
ciation for Health. Physical Edu
cation and Recreation.
The meeting will be held la
Kearney, Friday and Saturday.
In her demonstration. Dr. Ash
ton will present ways of teaching
the handling of various sized balls
in game situations. Fourth grade
students from the Kearney Public
Schools will participate in the
lesson.
The convention will also include
a volleyball officiating clinic.
