Huslcer Track Tea m Weak
In Broad Jump, Pole Vault
BY MARSHALL KUSHNER
Assistant Sports Editor
It's still rather early to tell how
the Nebraska track squad will
fair against conference competi
tion this winter, but it is a sure
thing Coach Ed Weir will' have
greater potential on this years'
team than the squad he finished
up with last year
The Huskers will definitely
be weakened in certain events,

a world dirt track vaulting record
with his 14'W leap last

threat in the pinch. It was Kehl

In the vaulting department, Don
Cooper and Len Kehl will be
missed. Cooper was constantly

year, hopes will be pinned on

and Phil Hleidek. Thode sup
ported Meissner in the high
jump last year and topped the
6'3" mark by the end of the
season. Moreland and Hldrtek
are both numeral winners from
Weir's frosh track team last
year. Hleidek won the confer
ence freshman meet in the high
jump and Moreland was second.
The pole vault will be as shy
of stars as one of Minsky's eirlie
show starlets. All hopes will be
shouldered by Jim Sommers,
varsity football star, and Bob
Selden.
Sommers and Selden are both
products of Lincoln high school
and neither were state gold medal

this year in favor of the 49.
Hendrickson is a very slow
starter, and Weir misht have
him in the quarter mile where
he will be needed more.
Jacobs and Chedester are both
question marks for the cinder,
squad this year. Jacobs received
a leg injury last year that sidc
lined him most of the year.
Chedester is recovering from a
slow healing knee injury, but
should be ready soon.
In the 440 race, Hendrickson
will be carrying most of the bur
den. If Jack Scoville, Hartington
ace, decides not to check out a
uniform this year, the task might
completely fall on Hendrickson's
shoulders.
Weir will be hoping that
Charley Hunley will break out
Into his own as he did in his
final year of prep competition at
Falls City. Hunley was bothered
by a pulled muscle last year that
kept him from getting too cl-ss
to a 50-second quarter. Hunley
could easily shake this jinx and
blossom into a real point-retter.
The distances will be somewhat
of a happier story with th re
turn to action of Lee Moore.
Moore, owner of a 4:19 clocking
two years ago, was made ineligible
for competition last year but will
