Olson Collects Ribbons From Cigarette Packages To Help Blind Youngster By JANE RANDALL Feature Editor All of Lois Olson's friends thought her project of picking up the red, yellow, blue ana green ribbons from cigarette packages was all a big joke. That is. until she. being lnsti gator of the idea here at the University, told them what it was all about. She explained it like this. First, of all, she said it's the real deal that the cellophane stronr-openers on cigarette packages go to a five-year-old boy in South Dakota. As soon as the boy acquires one pound of these things, he sends them in to one of the na tionally known cigarette com panies. In turn, this concern hag agreed to send him a seeing eve dor. Miss Olson said she received the idea of going into this wel iare project through a lady in her hometown, Bloomfield, Neb. "And, because University stu dentsquite a few of them smoke" she added, "I thought school might be a good place to pick up a whole lot more." On returning to school this fall, Miss Olson described how she ran around telling all her friends about it. And, laughing, she re membered how once someone asked her whether the dog were for herself or the little boy. Now that school has been In progress for sveral weeks, Miss Olson reports that she has col lected to a pint jar full of these cellonhane objects. "That means tightly packed, too." she asserted proudly. She also went on to tell how she had recruited one of her girl friends, a non-smoker, to help her. "She calls herself the 'pick-up sirl." Miss Olson said. "She feels that by eoing around collect' ing other people's donations, she is doing her bit for the cause." However, Miss Olson reported, charity work does get a ntue messy at times. She explained that her room was constantly in an uproar. People run in and out to bring the colored cellophane rib bons to her at any and every hour of the day or night, she said, "They lay them on the desk in fact, any place where tnere s a flat surface." she said. "It makes the room just a little harder to clean up, that's all." When she has enough strings from cigarette packages enough to pack tightly into a Quart jar Miss Olson is going to call it "mission accom plished." At that time, she'll pack up the whole business and send it off South Dakota bound. She's keeping one element of Jhe project right here, however. That element is the satisfaction that she's helping a small boy to help himself.
