Chancellor R. G. Gustavson
addressed the cadets, and Marvin
Franklin, an ordained minister on
the coaching staff, gave the invo
cation. Lt. Col. Alex C. Jamlcson, pro
fessor of Air Science at the Uni
versity presided. Oaths of office
were given the cadets by Capt.
Stuart VV. Peel, assistant pro
fessor of Air Science.

until 6 p.m., gather in the Union
Craft Shop (Room 12, basement)
for some first' rate lessons in a
wide variety of handicrafts.

creeping up on you. Fashion a
pair of mocs for Joe, paint a
figurine for Mom, or block-print
your own peflfconal cards. It's a

Scientists Find No Cure
For Colds, Only Relief

It is doubtful, according to an
article prepared for the Scientific
American magazine by Crlstopher
Howard Andrewes.
"There are things that can be
done .to relieve the unpleasantness
of colds," he says, "but up to the
present it still remains true that
the untreated cold will last about
seven days, while with careful
treatment it can be cured in a
week!"
Andrewes give two reasons why
the cure for colds has deluded
man:
"(1) Colds are not a serious
disease.
"(2) No convenient experimen
tal animal for investigating the
worth.

editor of the Lincoln Journal.

chimpanzees are susceptible to
the cold virus, they are so hard
to get and handle and are so ex
pensive that they are almost use
less, according to the writer.)
Ncverthless, a great deal has
been done In recent research to
find cure for colds. Andrewes re
ports that experiments performed
by the Common Cold Research
Unit of the Medical Research
Council at Salisbury, England,
have uncovered several facts con
corning the cold.
Scientists there, he writes, have
found that three factors create
colds "a germ, a person ripe for
infection and conditions suitable
for the transfer of the cold virus
to the person."
Women More Susceptible
They also found, according to
Andrewes, that women are more
susceptible to colds than men.
Another discovery mentioned in
his article is that the "cold virus
is not affected by streptomycin or
pencillin."
More is known about carriers
than about cures.
Infectious particles may float
in a room for an hour after a per
son sneezes, according to the writ
er. It is also known, he says, that
germs may be redistributed by
dusting and sweeping, and that
hands are one of the most ef
fective distributors of germs.
