Monday, February 5, 1 951' THE DAILY NEBRASKAN PAGE 3 Matmen, Gymnasts, Mermen an niK&iccsnEs uiransuin AJJ Powerful Cats Stop Home Winning Streak BY BILL MUNDELL Nebraska's home court hasket hall record of all victories and no .defeats hangs "by a blender thread today. The nation's num ber five team, namely the Wild cats from Kansas State, invade the Husker lair tonight and are favored to keep their conference Tecord unblemished. The Wild cats have a 4-0 league Tecord to date, good enough lor first place. From all appearances, at looks like no contest. It appears to be like any other .conference game "when the lirst place team meets the last .lace team. The Buskers took over that last place position Friday night in Ames when the Iowa State Cyclones took -out their spite .on the Scar let and withered the -visitors by 67-51 count. The Monday meeting will he the second game between the two schools this season. The Cats walloped the Cornhuskers earlier in the Kansas City tournament. There is no Teason why they should not .do it again. Except No Teason, xcept for that in significant fact that the Husk ers will be playing on their home court. It's true that the Huskers have not met any world beaters on the Coliseum maples this season, "but Tegardless cf that, it is rough on any team to meet the Huskers at home. In fact, only one team has consistently won their share of games on the Ne Upsets Still Haunt IM Play; Kappa Sigs, SAE's, Taus Fall The wave of upsets which be gan earlier this week continues to cloud in the intramural basket nail scene as three more clubs met unexpected defeats during Wednesday and Thursday night's action. Friday and Saturday's card will hrlng to a. close the bushiest week bring: to a close the busiest -week Ron. A total of 63 games will have been played "by Saturday eve ning. Sigma Alpha Epsilon, ranked eighth All-University, found its league title hopes almost com pletely shattered Thursday eve ning when it fell to an inspired Beta Sigma Psi team, 30-28. The Beta Sigs thus finished the demo lition work the ATO's had begun earlier Mb the week, the Taus having iipsdt the Sig Alphs by a .36-33 count on Monday. Woamsat 'Sparkles Virg Woamsat set off the fuse that blew the :Sig Alph's playoff hopes sky high with .a tie-brejak-ing basket in the last ten seconds of play. Woamsat's shot, a des peration over-the-head .one hander from deep in the corner, ripped through the meshes to climax a Beta 'Sig rally which had brought the score to 28-28 tie. Dannehl and Bauer sparked the last-half Beta Sig bid and finished with 10 and 7 points, respectively, Brown and Lea;h were tops for the luckless Sig Alphs with 6 points each. Lyle Altman was a thorn in the ATO's side all evening as he repeatedly drove in for easy lay ups. When the Tau defense would tighten to stop Altaian's on slaught, Stoup and Bunten would hit from the side with deadly one-handers. Altman was tops lor the victorious Nu's with 11 points. Stoup and Bunten aided the Sig Nu cause with B and 7 points, respectively. Bosley's long one-handers was the only . of fensive threat the ATO's could muster, and his 12 points were far from enough. Sigma Chi rolled to an impres sive 41-18 win over a befuddled Kappa Sigma team in the third major upet of the evening. 31 thus .ended a very disastrous week for the Kappa igs, they having been trounced earlier in the week by a -scrappy Delta I 2,'au Delta .crew, .38-21. g The Sig Chi attack was led by Thomas and Curtiss who hit for 16 and 7 points, respectively. The Win is the second of the week for the fast- improving Sig Chl'a, they having completely smoth- 1 ered Delta Upsilon 53-20, on Monday. I Sig V.vh lloll On The third-ranked All-Univer- 1 iity and second-ranked Fratern- lty "A" team, Sigma Phi Epsilon, toyed with Delta Upsilon for I three quarters before powering I its way to a lopsided 42-9 wic- tory. The DU's, one of the most impotent teams in Fraternity 1 '"A" play this year, failed to make g a field goal until late in the third I qtmrter. The Big Hps wore paced hy thr deadly forecourt shooting of Ar 1 llannen, who eollaoted 18 counter for the evenlng's scoring honon - Kay tCurtiss contributed S point I in addition .to playing a stll:i " floor game for the viotor? But to pull this mpset .of up sets, the Cornhuskers will have to rely upon more than the home-court jinx. 'They are faced with the responsibility .of stop ping -such court-flurries as Hitch, Barrett, Stone, Gibson, Iverson, and Head. Barrett Hurt NU It was Ernie Barrett that Trilled the Cornhuskers in the KC tour ney in December. It was Lew Hitch that led the Wildcat steam roller over powerful ILong Island university last Wednesday. It was Jack Stone who powered the K-Stater .over the Kansas Jayhawks. The list like this goes on and on. Any one man .on the Cat squad will break your hack with points if you strengthen your defense on another man. Coach Harry Good will rely upon the scoring and floor play of his two mainstays, Bob Pierce and Jim Buchanan. Pierce again was the hig point-getter for Nebraska in then loss to Iowa State Friday night. Bi- Bob connected lor six field goals and 6"7 free tosses for 18 markers. Only Pierce Bob was the only consistent hope for the Huskers, however, as the Cyclones held the rest of the Scarlet to only minor trouble. Buchanan manaeed onlv nine points, far below his game point average. Joe Good hit for Sour fielders tops for -the losers with seven and six pointe, Tespectively. Delta Tau Delta rolled to a 52-29 victory over a stubborn but outmanned Alpha vGamma Rho crew. The contest was never in doubt as the oft-beaten AGR's found themselves 11 points be hind in the first six minutes of play. With Neff and Paynich hit ting consistently on short jump Bhots, the Delt attack never let up. Neff finished with 11, Pay nich with 14. Frost and Monson were tops lor the losers with seven points each. Approach Scoring Mark Phi Kappa Psi went up against a weak Theta 3Ci aggregation and before the contest was far along it was apparent that the Phi Psi team had a chance of breaking m the intramural rscorlng" Tecord of 82 points. However, the at tempt fell 3 points as the final score 79-20. Jerry Anderson led the Phi Psi attack with .twenty-one points, followed by Larry Anderson with 34 and Bobby Reynolds -with 12. Bob Bale was high for the los ing Theta Xi's with 6 markers. The seventh-ranking Fratern ity "A" team, Brown Palace picked up its fourth win in five starts at the expense of a fast fading Beta Theta Pi team, 42-28. The only blotch on the Palacer's record is an early season loss to the powerful Phi Psi's. 'Williams Leads Palacers "Mel Williams was tops for the victorious Palacers with 14 points. B. Stake added ten to the winner's total Penold and Tapp led the vain bid of the Betas with 10 and 8 points, respectively. Nebraska Coop won a cloae de cision over Dorm B & C in a loosely played game, 22-18. Both clubs concentrated on tight de fenses and control-type play. Harold Gil liland in the" 130 lb. .division, Dave Mackie in the 167 lb. class, and Herb Reese, in the heavy weight division were the .only Huskers to post wins. Big Sev en Champ Reese pinned Colo rado's Bob Schalk for his third pin in three matches. Gymnasts Fall Coach Jake Geier's Husker gymnastics team fell before the Buffs, 52-44, Friday. It was a battle all the way between Col orado's ace performer, Bill Haase, and Nebraska's Al Dun avan. Haase copped three first places to roll .up 26 points. Dunavan scored 20. Although two Husker swim mers set pool and meet records and Nebraska's Eddie Craren put on a sensational show to win the .diving title, Nebraska lost to Colorado's mermen, 47-37, in a dual swim meet .at Boulder.
