nANGING OF THE GREENS Ellen Smith hall is the scene of the annual ceremony pictured above.
The hanging of the greens is conducted each year by the Y.W.C.A. Officers of the women's organiza
tions on campus, the advisory board, presidents of organized houses, Ag and city Y.W.C.A. cabinets,
deans of women and their assistants are invited to attend the ceremonies. Honored guest was Jimmie
Woodward, secretary of the student finance of the national board. The program committee included
Beth Wilkins, general chairman; Mary Hubka, arrangements chairman; Shirley Sidles, invitations; Nan
Cowles food chairman; Elizabeth Moodie, program chairman; Mary Anne Pederson, tree; Marilyn Clark,
greens; Jayne Wade, hospitality, and Marg Hughes, publicity.
Student Receives
Air Force Citation
A University student, Lt. (j.g.)
William T. Vierregger, USN, was
presented with an Oak Leaf clus
ter at ceremonies held in the
office of Capt. W X. Messmer,
USN, professor of naval science,
last Friday.
Lieutenant Vierregger received
this air force citation for having

pilot in the Berlin airlift, "Opera
tion Vittles."
The navy officer, an Omahan,
was commissioned as a naval avi
ator in April, 1944, and since that
time has had duty assignments in
many parts of the world, includ
ing the Phillipines, China, Japan
and Germany.
Lieutenant Vierregger is at
tending the university under the
Naval officers college training
program.

'Flicker Nmlil'
An old fashioned atmosphere
will be in order when the first in
a series of films are shown in the
Union ballioom Sunday at 7:30
p. m. Flicker Night is the theme.
Silent movies, guaranteed by
the Union general entertainment
committee, to be "comical, 'will
be featured. Humorous comments
will be given while the films are
in progress. Old time barbershop
music will be provided by the
Beta Sigma Psi quartette for in
termission entertainment Re
freshments will be sold.
Five or six short reels will be
the content of the program. There
is no admission charge.
Caroling Tour
Planned by
Red Cross Unit
A rnvnl tour bv University stu
dents will be a part of the Red
rvr.ee rniiffp Unit's Christmas
program for local institutions.
Gloria Lirsen ana Anne tigge,
institutions chairmen of the unit,
announced today that representa
tives of all organized houses will
join together to sing carols at lo
al homes.
Thr Carolina tour will be held
Tuesday, Dec. 12, in the evening.
Further information on me proj
ect will be announced later by
the co-chairmen.
Other developments in the
Christmas project were announced
by Miss Larsen. Kappa Sigma will
hold a party for the children of
Cedar home; Tau Kappa Epsilon
will entertain ten boys irom la
bitha home at their house. The
two men's houses are the first of
all organized houses and groups
contacted to promise support of
the plan.
Last year, some twenty houses
and groups took part in the proj
ect at thirteen local institutions.
Thev entertained with Santa
Claus acts, gift-giving, caroling
and party games. The institutions
included orphanages, old peoples
homes, the reformatory, peniten
tiary and Orthopedic, Veterans
and State Mental hospitals.
Houses and organizations inter
ested in having a part in the sea
son's program are urged to con
tact Miss Larsen, 2-7875. All par
ties will be arranged with the as
sistance of the Red Cross, which
will also provide transportation if
needed.
Phalanx Initiates
25 Wednesday
Twenty-five candidates were
initiated Wednesday night into
Phalanx, honorary R.O.T.C. fra
ternity. Initiates were: Allen Tully,
